With the games against Inter Milan and Real Madrid in the next week, FC Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has decided who’ll be the starting goalkeeper between Marc-André ter Stegen and Wojciech Szczesny.
FC Barcelona are heading into one of the most crucial stretches of their season, with pivotal matches against Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League semifinals and Real Madrid in La Liga. With Marc-André ter Stegen recently returning from injury, head coach Hansi Flick has made his decision regarding who will start between the German and Wojciech Szczesny.
Ter Stegen made his long-awaited return in Barcelona’s recent clash against Real Valladolid, his first appearance in 223 days after a knee injury suffered against Villarreal. Despite conceding early in the fifth minute, the veteran keeper made key saves in the second half, helping Barcelona complete a comeback win.
Asked about the German’s performance postgame, Flick offered his support. “Specially in the second half he showed how good he is and how he can perform. It was good to see that,” the German boss said in the post-match press conference.
Flick and the choice between Ter Stegen and Szczesny
Barcelona will be having key games in the upcoming week. The first one will be the second leg of the Champions League semifinal against Inter Milan next Tuesday, and then El Clasico in La Liga against Real Madrid on Sunday, who are trailing the Blaugrana side.
Ter Stegen has been one of the best goalkeeper over the last years, and having him back in the squad means a huge boost. However, when asked whether he’ll be the one playing the next game against Inter, Flick set the record straight:
“I don’t think so. Tek (Szczesny) will play in the Champions League and also he’ll play against Real Madrid. This is our plan, but today I’m really happy for Marc that he’s back and he showed that he’s on a good way.”
Szczesny, who came out of international retirement and joined Barcelona without playing a single minute in 2024, has made a strong impression in 2025. His quick adaptation and consistent performances have earned Flick’s trust in high-stakes matches, while Ter Stegen continues to regain full form after his long recovery.
