Inter Milan vs. Barcelona: Best stats ahead of Champions League semi-final second leg

Following a six-goal spectacular at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys last week, the second leg of Inter Milan and Barcelona‘s Champions League semi-final has a lot to live up to.

The two former European champions reconvene at San Siro on Tuesday evening after an enthralling 3-3 draw in Catalonia, where Inter wing-back Denzel Dumfries and Barca wing wizard Lamine Yamal hogged the spotlight.

However, something must give in 90 minutes, 120 minutes or from the penalty spot this time around, as Simone Inzaghi and Hansi Flick both vie to meet either Arsenal or Paris Saint-Germain in the Munich showpiece.

Ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final second leg, Sports Mole takes a look at the best stats relating to the game.

  • Inter’s 3-3 draw in the first leg extended their unbeaten Champions League run to seven matches, last losing in the competition to Bayer Leverkusen in December.
  • However, the Nerazzurri have now conceded five goals in their last two Champions League games, as many as in their previous 14 matches in the competition.
  • Inter have avoided defeat in each of their last 15 Champions League matches as the billed ‘home’ team, last suffering such a defeat in September 2022 against Bayern Munich.
  • Inter have also lost just four of their previous 26 European showdowns against Spanish clubs at home, winning 12 and drawing the other 10.
  • Inzaghi’s side ended a five-game winless run at the weekend by beating Hellas Verona 1-0 in Serie A, a result that also gave them their first clean sheet in 11 matches.
  • In that game, Inter made 10 changes to their starting XI from their previous match, last making as many alterations to a lineup all the way back in December 2015.
  • The Serie A side have won two and lost three of their previous five penalty shootouts in UEFA competition, but they suffered defeat in the most recent to Atletico Madrid in the 2023-24 UCL last 16.
  • In the first leg, Marcus Thuram‘s 30-second opener saw the Frenchman score the quickest Champions League semi-final goal in history.
  • Meanwhile, with two goals and an assist in Catalonia, Dumfries became the first Dutch player to be involved in three goals in a UCL semi-final game.
  • The defender also became the first Inter player to score twice in a Champions League semi-final and just the third Dutchman overall after Phillip Cocu for PSV Eindhoven in 2005 (vs. AC Milan) and Georginio Wijnaldum for Liverpool in 2019 (vs. Barcelona).

  • Barcelona have now failed to win either of their last two Champions League games after the first-leg draw, also losing 3-1 to Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of their quarter-final.
  • However, La Blaugrana have now found the back of the net in 19 straight Champions League fixtures, last drawing a blank in a 1-0 away loss to Shakhtar Donetsk in November 2023.
  • Barca have scored 40 goals in total in the 2024-25 Champions League, just the fifth occasion where a team has managed to find the back of the net 40 times in a single UCL campaign, and the first since Bayern Munich managed 43 in 2019-20.
  • Barcelona need to score six more goals to break the all-time record for the most by a team in one Champions League season, which they set themselves in the 1999-00 campaign, netting 45 times.
  • Flick’s side beat Real Valladolid 2-1 on Saturday night, a result that extended their unbeaten run in all tournaments to five games and scoring streak to 31 matches.
  • Barcelona have registered at least one goal in all of their matches in 2025 so far, last failing to fire in a 1-0 La Liga defeat to Leganes on December 15.
  • Barca have to go even further back to November 2024 for the last time they failed to score away from home; since that 1-0 loss to Real Sociedad, they have netted in 18 consecutive matches on the road.
  • However, Barcelona have also kept just one clean sheet in their last 10 Champions League away games, although that did come as recently as March, a 1-0 win at Benfica in the first leg of their last-16 tie.
  • The Catalan giants have won nine of their previous 31 matches away to Italian teams in Europe, losing an identical amount and playing out 13 draws.
  • In the Champions League specifically, Barcelona have won just five of their 24 away games against Italian clubs, with a 21% success rate their worst in any foreign nation in the competition.
  • Barcelona have won five and lost just one of their six penalty shootouts in UEFA competition, but they have not contested one since 1988-89, when they triumphed 5-4 over Lech Poznan in the European Cup Winners’ Cup second round.
  • In the first leg, Yamal became the youngest player to ever score in a Champions League semi-final at 17 years and 291 days, breaking the record set by Kylian Mbappe in 2017 (18 years and 140 days).
  • Raphinha has been directly involved in 20 Champions League goals this term – 12 of his own and eight assists – the record for a Barcelona player in a single season in the competition.
  • If the Brazilian scores or assists on Tuesday, he will match the all-time record for direct goal involvements in one UCL season, set by Cristiano Ronaldo (21 in 2013-14).

  • The 3-3 first-leg stalemate between Inter and Barca was the joint-highest score draw in a Champions League semi-final match, after Dynamo Kiev and Bayern Munich shared the same scoreline in April 1999.
  • This tie could become just the fourth Champions League semi-final to see 10 goals scored over two legs after Juventus 6-4 Monaco (1997-98), Liverpool 7-6 Roma (2017-18) and Real Madrid 6-5 Manchester City (2021-22).
  • Inter and Barcelona will be meeting for the 18th time on Tuesday; La Blaugrana lead the way with eight wins compared to just three for the Italian side, and they have played out six draws.
  • However, Inter are now unbeaten in three successive games against Barcelona, also playing out a 3-3 draw in the 2022-23 group stage after a 1-0 win at home.
  • Barcelona’s last win against Inter was a 2-1 success at San Siro in December 2019, their only away victory against the Nerazzurri to date.
  • In the only previous UCL semi-final contested between the two clubs, Inter won 3-2 on aggregate, prevailing 3-1 at home before a 1-0 away loss.
