Manchester United fans send clear Matteo Darmian and Henrikh Mkhitaryan message as Inter Milan duo reach Champions League final

Manchester United had both Matteo Darmian and Henrikh Mkhitaryan on their books several years ago.

Neither player was deemed a particularly a huge success at Old Trafford, but now both have reached the Champions League final for the second time in three years.

On Wednesday night, Inter Milan triumphed in arguably one of the greatest Champions League games of all time as they got the better of Barcelona.

After serving up a thrilling 3-3 draw in the semi-final first leg, both teams matched that same scoreline in the second leg, forcing extra time.

Davide Frattesi’s goal in the 99th minute proved the difference between the two teams as Inter got over the line and booked their place in the final at the Allianz Arena.

Manchester United fans made similar points about both of their former players and, with that, shared their views on the state of their club.

Manchester United slate their club after two players deemed flops at Old Trafford shine elsewhere

Man United fans were disappointed but not overly surprised that two players who could’ve been deemed flops at their club were flying high elsewhere.

One Man United fan wrote on X: “Imagine being told 7 years ago that Mkhitaryan and Darmian would be Champions League Finalists in 2025.”

Another wrote: “Inter took Darmian & Mkhitaryan from us for nothing, signed Sommer on a free transfer, sold Onana to us for 50million & are on their way to their second CL final in 3 years?

“WE ARE BEYOND SAVING…”

The messages of near-disbelief kept coming, with one fan posting: “Darmian and Mkhitaryan have 2 UCL finals under their belts after leaving us…”

Another supporter wrote: Since leaving Man United, Darmian & Mkhitaryan have reached 2 UCL finals. They also won 2 Scudetto titles.

“In that time, United have been in no UCL finals & won 0 league titles. Yet top reds & e-tacticos made you believe they were rubbish, finished & not good enough for United.”

Another fan said: “I can’t believe I’m watching Darmian and Mkhitaryan playing in the Champions League in May 2025.

“They were both considered not good enough at United a decade ago and they’re strolling it in their mid-thirties. Fair play.”

How Matteo Darmian and Henrikh Mkhitaryan fared at Manchester United

Darmian joined Man United from Torino in July 2015 for a fee reportedly worth around £12.7million.

The Italy international was on the Red Devils’ books for just over four years, joining Parma in September 2019 for around £2million.

Darmian registered 92 appearances, along with one goal and three assists, and he won a Europa League, an FA Cup and a League Cup at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Mkhitaryan joined Man United from Borussia Dortmund in July 2016 for a fee of around £30million.

He was on the Red Devils’ books for just 18 months before joining Arsenal in the famous swap deal that also included Alexis Sanchez.

Mkhitaryan, a retired Armenia international, made 63 appearances for Man United, registering 13 goals and 11 assists.

Like Darmian, he won a Europa League, an FA Cup and a League Cup at Old Trafford, plus a Community Shield.
