While Tottenham Hotspur’s defensive frailties are often highlighted as their biggest weakness, Spurs’ attack is far from being the best either.
Ange Postecoglou’s side tend to score goals in flurries, such as in their 3-1 win against Southampton in March but since then, they have only score more than once in a game against Wolves recently.
Some might attribute Tottenham’s lack of bite up front to a mere systematic issue but the North Londoners do not possess the required quality in the forward areas of the pitch.
Heung-min Son has disappointed this campaign as he looks on his last legs, Dominic Solanke is yet to convince since joining Spurs from Bournemouth and Brennan Johnson has had an up-and-down season.
Thankfully for Tottenham fans, a number of forwards have been linked with a move to N17 such as Antoine Semenyo and Randal Kolo Muani.
Tottenham’s main summer transfer target should be Antoine Semenyo
Tottenham are ready to sign Semenyo and are believed to be open to paying the big bucks to secure his services.
Regardless of how Antoine Semenyo’s future eventually pans out, Tottenham should do everything in their power to sign him for various reasons.
Firstly, arguably the most glaring hole in Spurs’ squad is in the wide areas — with Brennan Johnson being frustrating and Heung-min Son flattering to deceive — unlike the Ghanian international, who has been one of the most in-form widemen in the Premier League this season.
For Tottenham, one of the biggest green flags about Semenyo if they step up their efforts to sign him is that he is almost equally effective on both flanks — having registered 11 goals and seven assists this season as well.
Ola Aina called Semenyo “a top, top player” and aside from the 25-year-old’s tactical malleability and productivity, what also makes him a brilliant winger is that he can take on his man for fun.
When Bournemouth beat Tottenham 1-0 in December, Semenyo turned Destiny Udogie inside and out from the right flank and has made life hell for other full-backs such as Kyle Walker this season — tearing him to shreds when the Cherries defeat Manchester City 2-1.
Being a willing defender while being helped by his searing pace and raw strength that make him a tireless enough presser, Ange Postecoglou or his potential future replacement at Spurs would have every reason to fall in love with the Chelsea-born speedster.
Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo’s future could already be decided
Perhaps the only gripe Tottenham supporters would have with Semenyo if he did make a move to the club is the fact that he told The Athletic that he is an Arsenal fan.
“I am an Arsenal fan. I don’t conflict the two with my job. It is great to play against Arsenal, a team I have watched all my life and I want to play for the top clubs as well. In order for that to happen I need to prove it.”
However, Semenyo could move to Saudi Arabia from Bournemouth and a shock move to the Pro League looks like his most likely destination, despite Tottenham, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle United all being keen on his signature.
But with Andoni Iraola’s side demanding in excess of £60 million for his signature, Tottenham must splash the cash and sign Semenyo as he went on to tell the Athletic that he would be open to joining a club that plays in the Europa League as well.
With Spurs potentially able to offer Champions League football if they reign supreme, they could get their hands on the Cherries talisman, who revealed: Yeah, any team that plays Champions League, Europa — that’s the aim.”
“I know that’s not going to come with a click of my fingers, it’s going to take some time. It’s going to take goals. It’s going to take a lot of consistent performances. But I’ve worked all my life for that and I’m just going to continue working hard. That’s my mentality.”
