On this day in 2003, Arsenal‘s incredible 49-game unbeaten run in the Premier League started in North London.
The Gunners kicked off what would become a record-breaking run with a 6-1 home success over Southampton; Jermaine Pennant famously marked his Premier League debut with three goals, while French attacker Robert Pires also scored a hat-trick for the North London club.
Arsenal would then beat Sunderland in their final match of the 2002-03 campaign, and Arsene Wenger‘s side incredibly went 49 matches in the Premier League without losing a single game.
The Gunners would see their lengthy unbeaten run in the Premier League come to an end away to Manchester United on October 2004; Ruud van Nistelrooy and Wayne Rooney were on the scoresheet for Sir Alex Ferguson‘s side in what was a highly-charged contest.
Arsenal’s achievement will live long in the memory, and it remains to be seen whether their record is ever broken considering the competitive nature of English football.
