‘He’s the one’: Lukasz Fabianski says West Ham have a ‘proper leader’ in their ranks – and he’s likely to leave this summer

West Ham United are looking to end the Premier League season on a high after enduring a nightmare campaign which could see them finish fourth from bottom.

West Ham are safe thanks in part to how poor the three promoted sides have been this term – there’s a 15-point gap between the Hammers and 18th-placed Ipswich Town.

Nonetheless, West Ham will look to regroup and go again next season – though there could be some notable departures over the summer.

Lukasz Fabianski has now sung the praises of a Hammers player he says is the “proper ‘leader leader’” in the camp – but he’s set to leave the club as things stand.

Lukasz Fabianski praises Aaron Cresswell leadership at West Ham

Fabianski and James Ward-Prowse are the latest guests on the Seaman Says podcast, with both speaking about a number of topics including West Ham.

When asked which other Hammers players are leaders in the dressing room, Fabianski spoke at length about Aaron Cresswell.

The West Ham goalkeeper described Cresswell as the most vocal presence in the Hammers dressing room and the one who is most like a conventional leader.

“You have probably Aaron Cresswell who does both (leads by example and leads vocally), more or less,” he said.

“So he’s vocal and he does it on the pitch as well every single day, he’s on it every single day.

“And when there’s a time to speak or he thinks ‘okay it’s time to’ (speak up), then he will do it for sure.

“So Aaron Cresswell is the one I think at the moment he’s the most vocal one, probably the loudest – he’s the one who’s the proper ‘leader leader’ in the group.”

Aaron Cresswell’s future

Cresswell has been at West Ham since July 2014, when he joined from Ipswich Town for just £2million.

The 35-year-old has clocked up 366 competitive appearances for the Hammers, registering 11 goals and 37 assists.

Last year, Cresswell was set to be out of contract, but West Ham offered him a one-year extension, which he signed.

As things stand, he will be out of contract at the end of the season, and there haven’t been any updates regarding his future either way.

On one hand, Cresswell is 35 and, with his contract expiring, West Ham could well decide to get him off their wage bill and bring in someone new.

On the other hand, he’s such an influential figure in the dressing room that it would be a shame for the Hammers to lose his services – as a player or otherwise.
