Tottenham could be back in the market for a new central defender this summer.
Spurs beat Wolves to the signing of Kevin Danso just before the transfer deadline in February to hand Ange Postecoglou some depth in that department.
However, Cristian Romero could leave Tottenham this summer – Atletico Madrid are keen – while Micky van de Ven is unfortunately too injury prone for Spurs to rely on throughout an entire season at this point.
Speaking about the Dutchman, there is a defender Tottenham hope to sign who idolises the Spurs No.37 – and has also admitted he watched the north Londoners during his childhood.
Maxime Esteve talks up Tottenham amid transfer rumours
In case you missed it, Tottenham made a £20m bid to sign Maxime Esteve from Burnley on transfer deadline day – even after the arrival of Danso.
We expect Spurs to resurrect this saga in the summer despite Burnley winning promotion to the Premier League, and the Frenchman has now been speaking about Tottenham when asked if he has a “dream” move in mind.
Esteve told Foot Mercato: I’ve never really been a fan of a club when I was a kid. I was more a fan of some players, but not a fan of a club. I dreamed of England really when I was a kid, I watched on TV. My favourite player was Gareth Bale when he played in Tottenham at the time.
“My dream is more to play for a top six club in England.”
Interestingly, Esteve could not stop talking about Spurs, adding: “There’s a player I love very much in the Premier League… Micky van de Ven, the centre of Tottenham.
“He is very fast, and I like him because I have the impression that I have a bit of the same speed qualities, even if he goes much faster. I feel inspired by him, because he’s a player who has about the same profile as me.”
Spurs face competition for Maxime Esteve
Tottenham are not the only side who admire the 22-year-old.
“One of the best days of my life.”

TBR Football understand Crystal Palace want to sign Esteve as the south Londoners prepare to lose Marc Guehi this summer.
The England international is approaching the final 12 months of his contract at Selhurst Park.
However, Tottenham actually bid for Guehi before Esteve, so we cannot rule out the chance of the Crystal Palace No.6 moving to Spurs, with the Burnley defender replacing him in SE25.
