Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes are only a few of the players within Manchester United’s ranks who seem to be of the calibre to be key cogs in Ruben Amorim’s project ahead of next season.

Amorim is a huge admirer of Fernandes, who has far and away been United’s best player this campaign.

While Mainoo has had a difficult season, he remains the jewel in the Red Devils’ crown and a player who has the potential to usher his boyhood club into a new era where could finally taste success one day.

But any side’s form in the league is indicative of their true quality as a team and the fact that Manchester United sit in 15th place in the Premier League tells one all they need to know about the state of their squad.

As a result, Manchester United could make five signings this summer as the belief within Old Trafford seems to be that unless they rebuild their squad, Ruben Amorim is destined to fail.

Man United should make Adam Wharton their number one transfer target

A player who should be Manchester United’s number one transfer target come the summer transfer window is Adam Wharton.

Manchester United are interested in snapping Wharton up, who Mainoo has played alongside for England and the youngster should suggest his boyhood club to sign him for several reasons.

While Matheus Cunha could join Man United, the Crystal Palace midfielder would arguably be an even more important signing for United. First and foremost, the highly-rated technician’s phenomenal range of passing and sublime technical ability would help bring a stop to United’s long-running chaotic approach to games.

If Manchester United aspire to become an elite side again, they will need to control games and Wharton is one of the finest conductors in English football — akin to a young Michael Carrick.

But most importantly, the 21-year-old is a holding midfielder and an adept one — using his long legs to expertly win tackles, mop up any signs of danger and come out on top of duels for fun.

Casemiro has been linked with an exit and at 33, he is not getting younger while Manuel Ugarte lacks Wharton’s physicality to masterfully anchor Manchester United’s backline.

But a trait what the former Reading wonderkid shares with any great sitting midfielder is the youngster’s presence improves his teammates — with Fernandes expected to become even more devastating when consistently receiving the ball off him between the lines closer to goal.

Furthermore, the Portuguese international’s workload will be alleviated if he plays alongside Wharton as he would no longer have to drop into a double pivot to get the ball and stick to doing what he does best; occupying advanced zones while creating and scoring goals with ease.

Adam Wharton’s stance on Crystal Palace exit

Real Madrid have scouted Wharton, which goes to show how gifted the Englishman truly is.

While even Arsenal are interested in Wharton as the competition for his signature could be heated if he departs Selhurst Park this summer.

However, Wharton is in no rush to leave Crystal Palace.

Furthermore, Palace have slapped a £100 million price tag on their prized asset for potential suitors.

But if Manchester United can convince Crystal Palace to lower their demands, they should as Wharton would transform their fortunes and Mainoo would perhaps say so as well.
