Liverpool’s asking price for Harvey Elliott could put paid to Wolves’ chances of signing the midfielder, who could be allowed to leave Anfield this summer.

Elliott has barely figured for the Reds under Arne Slot, making his first Premier League start of the season last weekend as Liverpool played Chelsea in its first game since wrapping up the title. The youngster’s other four starts this season were spread across the Carabao Cup, the FA Cup and a Champions League dead rubber against PSV Eindhoven.

Wolves have been linked with a move for Elliott, but Wolves journalist Liam Keen said that Liverpool’s asking price is likely to prove prohibitive.

“I think he’s a good player, I think he’d do really well at Wolves, definitely be keen. The thing that’s going to kill you straight away is we’re talking about £40 million ($53 million),” Keen said on the E&S Wolves Podcast.

“Wolves are just not going to spend that on players unless something major changes. Everything we’ve been told, everything we’re aware of from the previous plans is that they’re not going to spend this kind of money on players, and we don’t expect that to change.

“However, Wolves do like him. I’m not going to say that he’s definitely not signing for this club in the summer, but I can say pretty comfortably that he’s not signing for this club for £40 million.”

Elliott lined up in 19 games across the Premier League and Champions League under Jurgen Klopp last season, and most fans anticipated that he would kick on under Slot.

A broken foot kept Elliott out from September to November but upon his return to fitness it became clear that he was not considered a part of Slot’s first-choice XI.

That has obviously not changed, leading to suggestions that he could be offloaded. Elliott addressed his future last week, saying. “If I had it my way, my future would be here, I would play each and every game here and stay here for the rest of my career.

“But it all depends on managers, the people above, and as I said, you don’t know what could happen. But as far as I am aware I am here, here to stay and this is the club I want to be at.”

Slot was asked about Elliott’s comments a few days later and said: “Harvey is one of the players who hasn’t had as much playing time as he maybe deserves, but like some others he’s in competition with so many good players that mainly I’ve chosen.

“Also partly because he was injured for a long time and I’ve been honest with him, the first part after he came back from his injury he wasn’t the same as he was before his injury.

“But the last few months he’s back to his old level again. There was no need for me to start with different players, but I think if you look at the amount of minutes that he had in the last one or two months and the time before, you can see it goes up already. So that tells you that we like. I like him more now than I did the first months when he came back from his injury.”
