Liverpool steps up Milos Kerkez transfer plan as space to be made in roster

Liverpool is seemingly stepping up its plans to address the left-back position during the summer transfer window, with the club planning to offload Kostas Tsimikas.

Tsimikas has been at Liverpool since 2020, largely operating as a back-up option to Andy Robertson, but it is clear that the Greece international, who was recently inked with a trophy-winning tattoo, is not an appropriate option to succeed Robertson as the team’s first-choice left-back.

Liverpool is keen to sign a new left-back during the upcoming window as Arne Slot looks to put his stamp on the squad after winning the Premier League title with a group of players that was assembled by Jurgen Klopp.

Robertson, 31, has endured a difficult season on an individual level, but despite that, it seems as though Liverpool plans to keep him at the club to compete with whichever new signing the club makes in the off-season.

Hungary international Milos Kerkez, 21, has emerged as Liverpool’s top target after impressing for Bournemouth, and if he does end up moving to Anfield, it seems likely that he and Robertson will be the two left-backs in Liverpool’s squad next season.

Tsimikas, therefore, will be allowed to leave Liverpool this summer, two years before his Reds contract is due to expire. The 28-year-old has made 114 appearances during his five seasons with the club, winning the Premier League, the FA Cup and two League Cups.

Tsimikas may not have featured a whole lot during Liverpool’s title-winning campaign, but he has still appeared in 17 games — comfortably enough to guarantee him a winner’s medal. The left-back, who moved to Liverpool from Olympiacos, is the only Greek player in history to have won the Premier League.

Bournemouth’s Kerkez has emerged as one of the best left-backs in the Premier League this season and is a firm Liverpool target.

Bournemouth signed a new left-back during the January transfer window, with Julio Soler, 20, arriving from Argentinian team Lanus, and while he was not signed as a direct replacement for Kerkez, Soler’s arrival would no doubt smooth over any possible exit for the Liverpool target.

In a YouTube stream during January, Kerkez responded to rumors linking him with Liverpool in a manner that Reds fans wouldn’t have liked, saying: “I will not go to Liverpool. For everybody listening, I will not go to Liverpool.”

It would be silly to read too much into that, though, given Kerkez was unlikely to say otherwise and risk piling unnecessary pressure on himself for the remainder of the campaign.
