As always, these things are a matter of opinion.
The season is wrapping up for teams all around Europe and Bayern Munich is no exception. With just two Bundesliga games left before the end of the season (the FIFA Club World Cup notwithstanding) and having already been confirmed as title winners in the league, it starts to become time to reflect on the season just gone.
Speaking in the press conference ahead of Bayern’s last game of the season in the Allianz Arena, board member for sport Max Eberl looked back at the season and opined that it is rather underrated:
“At the moment, I feel the season is still being viewed as a bit ‘too normal’ [from the outside],” Eberl said, via @iMiaSanMia. “The feeling is that winning the Bundesliga is a given for FC Bayern. Last season, we didn’t live up to our expectations. This season, we distanced a very strong Leverkusen team. It’s pretty much the same Leverkusen team of last season. We’ve been top of the table since the third matchday, we’ve been very stable, and we’ve always responded very well to setbacks. It’s a special, important title. We knew the pressure was on in every game. In the Champions League, we beat PSG this season, the current finalists. And we played on equal terms against [Inter Milan]. There’s still a little detail missing [to win the Champions League], but it’s not impossible. In the [DFB] Pokal, we dominated Leverkusen with 10 men for 70 minutes but were eliminated. There’s a different spirit this season; it was an important step. We’re hungry for more.”
Of course, as an executive of the club whose stay depends on the immediate successful future of the club, Eberl is likely to take a glass half full type of approach. He is correct at noting that this season was an important step. The feeling was dour after last season and it felt as if the club had hit a low point. But there is a project being developed at the club and this season was better than the last. The important thing is to ensure that Bayern continue to develop on an upward trajectory next season.
