Milan staged yet another second-half comeback to defeat Bologna 3-1 at San Siro, just days before the two sides will clash again in the Coppa Italia Final on May 14. With Santiago Gimenez and Christian Pulisic at the heart of the turnaround, the Rossoneri proved they are far from done this season under Sergio Conceicao.

The victory doesn’t just serve as a morale booster ahead of their trip to Rome—it also demonstrates a pattern that’s become a hallmark of Milan’s campaign: the Rossoneri never stop believing, no matter the deficit.

The opening 45 minutes hinted at a game played with caution. The home side was without Rafael Leao due to suspension, while Bologna was forced to reshuffle with key players like Dan Ndoye and Emil Holm missing. Yet, neither side fully seized the initiative.

Vincenzo Italiano’s side had the better of the opening exchanges. Fikayo Tomori‘s early exit due to a head injury disrupted Milan’s rhythm, and Riccardo Orsolini missed two great chances—one a far-post header, another a shot blasted over the bar. Still, it was Orsolini who eventually broke the deadlock four minutes into the second half, cutting inside and curling a beautiful left-footed strike beyond Mike Maignan.

It was a deserved lead, but Milan was about to flip the script again.

Conceicao’s changes pay off once more

Trailing 1-0 and with their attack lacking edge, Milan turned to the bench. Santiago Gimenez—who had recently scored against Venezia and assisted against Genoa—entered the fray, alongside Samuel Chukwueze and Kyle Walker. The switch in tempo was immediate.

In the 73rd minute, Milan struck. A quick counter began inside their own half, with Joao Felix feeding Chukwueze. Though his pass to Gimenez was intercepted, the loose ball fell to Pulisic, who calmly slid it to the Mexican for a clinical finish. Indeed, Gimenez now has three goal involvements in his last three appearances—all as a substitute.

Pulisic helps seal the comeback

With San Siro roaring, Milan continued to push. Just minutes later, Chukwueze once again burst down the flank and cut it back to Felix. His mishit shot bounced off a defender and rolled perfectly to Pulisic, who struck low into the corner to make it 2-1.

Though Bologna nearly equalised late on—Maignan had to react quickly to deny Nicolo Cambiaghi—the match was settled in stoppage time. A devastating counter-attack saw Chukwueze surge forward before feeding Gimenez, who cut inside and dispatched a tidy finish into the bottom corner for his second goal of the night.
