Transfer Radar: Newcastle United interested in Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sané

Should Sané wind up leaving Bayern this summer, Newcastle could be well in the race to sign him.

Up until just recently, it seemed like Leroy Sané was very close to agreeing to a contract extension at Bayern Munich. All of the signals suggested that he was ready and willing to take a wage cut to stay with the German Rekordmeister and go on a performance-based contract as the club preps to make their blockbuster mover for Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz during this summer’s transfer window.

The player was ready to sign, the club had already drawn up initial terms and conditions that just needed to be fine-tuned, but then it had come out that Sané had switched agents to Pini Zahavi, who has a history with Bayern to say the very least. In the past, Robert Lewandowski had hired him to help shop him around La Liga — this was around the same time that the Polish ace had been critical of Bayern’s front office and board not signing enough top talents. Zahavi also played a role in David Alaba leaving for Real Madrid on a free transfer in the summer of 2021, a deal that Zahavi got decent commissions from.

With Sané hiring Zahavi being the latest twist of the tale in the transfer saga, it has now been reported by Sport Bild’s Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl (via @iMiaSanMia) that Newcastle United have made inquiries about the winger. It is now understood that, if he does wind up leaving Bayern this summer, Sané would prefer a return to the Premier League in England, where he was previously employed by Manchester City. London would also be a geographical preference, but Newcastle does provide a viable alternative package should none of the London-based clubs make a solid move for him.

Nonetheless, being able to play in the UEFA Champions League is also a vital requirement for Sané’s potential new club if he does leave Munich. For now, the transfer poker between the player in the club could turn in any direction at any given moment, but it is understood that the club’s hierarchy isn’t exactly thrilled with him switching agents at this current juncture. They feel that the player should feel grateful that he was even offered the potential for a new deal at all, given that they spent decent money securing the new deals for Alphonso Davies, Jamal Musiala, and Joshua Kimmich — all prior to this summer’s planned move for Wirtz.
