Spurs will have their sights firmly set on a major prize this season as they prepare to face Manchester United in the Europa League final.

A win would not only end their long-running trophy drought but also secure a coveted place in next season’s Champions League. That qualification could prove crucial in attracting top-tier talent during the summer transfer window.

Among the key areas Tottenham plan to strengthen is the midfield — with an England international among their top targets.

Tottenham leading the race to sign Angel Gomes

The futures of several Spurs midfielders remain uncertain heading into the summer, including Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur.

TBR Football previously reported that Tottenham are actively working to offload Bissouma this summer, while Atletico Madrid are keen on signing Bentancur.

Angel Gomes has been linked with a move to Tottenham across the past couple of transfer windows, with the club keen on bolstering their midfield options.

And according to the latest report from CaughtOffside, Spurs are currently leading the race to sign the 24-year-old midfielder, with Ange Postecoglou’s side pushing to secure him on a free transfer.

However, they face stiff competition from several clubs including Manchester United, with a potential return to Old Trafford still on the cards for Gomes.

Everton, Crystal Palace, Napoli, Juventus, and Marseille are also reportedly interested in his signature.

The 24-year-old began his career in Man United’s academy, where he quickly stood out as a highly promising talent.

However, with first-team opportunities limited at Old Trafford, he chose to move on in search of regular playing time, ultimately leaving the club in 2020.

Gomes went on to sign for Ligue 1 side Lille, where he has since developed into one of the team’s key players under previous manager Paulo Fonseca.

His performances have drawn widespread praise — including from former Manchester United academy teammate Anthony Elanga who hailed Gomes as ‘amazing’.

The Sweden international said: “He’s honestly so good. I feel like people watched him in the U21 Euros that England won, he showed his qualities as a number six, eight and ten – he’s amazing.”
