The Bayern Munich legend is on his way out the door…

In an interview with FCBayern.com, Bayern Munich legend Thomas Müller touched on a number of topics.

On his 13th Bundesliga title

Müller: “The numbers are all well and good, but you still experience each title win individually. You focus on the current season, on that one season; you’re working towards it; that’s the league table that counts. Whether you were champion three years ago or not is of no interest to anyone anymore,” told FCBayern.com (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “ In the Bundesliga, it’s all about the title that concerns you most over the course of the year and also influences the atmosphere the most – both internally and externally. Every week there’s a game that’s being discussed all over Germany, up and down the pitch. That’s why I really, really like the Bundesliga title. I appreciate the difficulty of the competition. It’s one thing to be good. But when you repeatedly prevail against opponents who try to beat you every year, that’s an achievement that has always appealed to me. That’s why, after last year, it’s all the more gratifying that we managed to become champions again.”

On if this title mean more because it is his last championship with the club

Müller: “Yes, the whole situation is very special for me. Being presented with my last league trophy in my last home game for FC Bayern evokes emotions even in a veteran like me. I’m not the only one who feels this way. I’m definitely looking forward to Saturday.

“Just looking at the number of shirts I’ve signed recently… The topic has obviously been in the media for the past four weeks, especially in the Munich media and the football media. The topic of Thomas Müller is being discussed up and down. I feel like I’m recognized and spoken to more than ever when I step out the door. Everyone wants to catch a glimpse of Thomas Müller before he disappears [laughs].”

On preparing for his final home game in the Bundesliga

Müller: “I’m just trying to enjoy it.. I know it will be my last home game and that it will also be about me as an individual after the game. As far as possible, it will be somewhat separate from the sporting aspect, because we’re going to the Allianz Arena to play football and celebrate the title with the fans. That’s my priority. Of course, I also want to take advantage of this opportunity to say goodbye to the fans in the stadium one last time. Even if this farewell doesn’t feel like it’s forever, because I’m still alive.”

On…the end

Müller: “I have to say, it still feels a bit far away at the moment. Also because we’re not familiar with the competition yet. I believe and hope that the many different clubs, and thus also the different cultures, will ensure a diverse mix. There are successful teams from many countries, all of them with good quality. And then you have the top European teams. There’s a quality to this tournament, and at the same time, a diversity. I think the way it’s set up—of course, also with the prize money the clubs can win—is important for the clubs as well. I’m looking forward to getting closer to the tournament and feeling the atmosphere there for the first time. There’s going to be a lot going on.”

On potentially winning the Club World Cup

Müller: “If we leave as winners of this first Club World Cup, I hope we’ll feel like: Hey, we’ve really achieved something big as a team here.”
