Sané’s switch of agency changed everything.
Leroy Sané has been the talk of Munich for the past few days. Reports stated that he was on the verge of signing an extension with Bayern Munich before he changed his agency, apparently desiring more money than what his previous agency had negotiated for him.
Speaking ahead of Bayern’s Bundesliga match against Borussia Mönchengladbach, board member for sport Max Eberl virtually confirmed not just the belief that an agreement was close but that Sané does want more money.
“We have a very good relationship with his old and new management. It was surprising for us. We’ll see what happens. We thought it was so close,” Eberl stated, via @iMiaSanMia. “But we’ll see, we’ll speak to each other. Our wish is to extend Leroy’s contract, we’ve communicated that to him. But we have our limits. If the limits are exceeded, then it will be very difficult. Let’s see what happens.”
Still, Eberl does not resent Sané for the sudden change of track.
“Until the deal is finalized, nothing can be said. We have a clear idea and thought we were on the right track,” the former Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director said. “Of course, we’re talking to the new agency. There’s no bad blood; the players are free to make their own decisions. Leroy’s performances in recent weeks have been very good; he’s shown that he’s committed to Bayern Munich. We hope he will extend, and if not, we’ll move on as well.”
Head coach Vincent Kompany, of course, was also asked about his former teammate’s future and whether he had tried to convince Sané to stay but refused to get involved beyond the sporting side of things.
“The priority for me is always the sporting side,” Kompany said, via @iMiaSanMia. “We had a conversation about what I’m planning to do next season. I’m staying out of everything else. I understand that a player has concerns. It’s an important phase in his life. For me, it’s important that the boys perform well, and Leroy has done that.”
Given Sané’s contract is up in less than two months, one would assume things will come to a head very soon.
