Bournemouth have confirmed that Alex Scott will undergo surgery after he sustained a broken jaw in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa.

Scott sustained the injury in the early stages of the contest after he was caught by Tyrone Mings‘s right elbow as he attempted to challenge the Aston Villa defender.

The midfielder played on after he received lengthy treatment, before he went down again following an incident with Amadou Onana, and was then replaced by Justin Kluivert at half time.

Ollie Watkins‘s effort in first-half stoppage time ultimately proved to be the difference between the two sides, with Bournemouth unable to capitalise on Jacob Ramsey‘s late red card for two bookable offences.

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola admitted that Ramsey should not have been sent off, although he was angered by the decision not to show Mings a red card for the elbow on Scott.

“It’s not a red card for me at all.”

Bournemouth confirm Scott surgery

“The second yellow that Ramsey received is not a second yellow,” Iraola told BBC Sport after the game. “Tyrone Mings knows what he is doing, he knew where Alex was. It was very violent.

“The value of a red card in the sixth minute or the 80th minute is very different. He sees Alex coming, and for me, it is very dangerous.

“He was almost knocked out. After the elbow, we didn’t know if he could continue. He wanted to continue, but he was not 100%. It [was] a very violent elbow.”

Bournemouth released a statement on Sunday to confirm that Scott sustained a fractured jaw and will have to undergo surgery.

The statement read: “AFC Bournemouth can confirm that midfielder Alex Scott has suffered a fractured jaw following a collision during yesterday’s game with Aston Villa.

“The 21-year-old went down seven minutes into the match after contact from Villa defender, Tyrone Mings, and was later substituted at half-time after being unable to continue.

“Scans have since revealed a displaced fracture, and Scott will undergo surgery to stabilise the jaw. He will miss the remainder of the season and have the full support of the club and its medical team throughout the recovery process.”

Scott to miss final two games

Scott’s injury deals a further blow to Bournemouth’s hopes of securing an eighth-place finish, which could become a Conference League qualification spot, depending on the winner of the FA Cup final between Manchester City and Crystal Palace.

The 21-year-old will miss the away clash with Man City on May 20, as well as the final day encounter against relegated Leicester City at the Vitality Stadium.

It remains to be seen whether the injury will affect his involvement in the Under-21 European Championships, which take place in Slovakia from June 11 to 28.

If fit, Scott would likely feature in Lee Carsley‘s England Under-21 squad after featuring in both friendlies against France and Portugal in the most recent international window.
