Misfiring Reds striker has admirers queuing up for his services

Darwin Nunez has had mixed fortunes since his record move to the Premier League.

Liverpool won the league title in his second season but his personal contribution hasn’t been what he’d have liked.

The Uruguayan striker has 25 Premier League goals to his name but could easily have scored 25 more in his two years at Anfield.

Nunez’s future is unclear but it’s understood that Liverpool are willing to listen to offers for a player who has started just eight Premier League fixtures since Arne Slot replaced Jurgen Klopp as manager last summer.

But at 25 years of age and boasting the goalscoring abilities that attracted Klopp and Liverpool in the first place, Nunez won’t be short of potential suitors when the transfer window opens.

According to reports, those options are starting to come into focus.

According to the Express: “Italian publication Corriere dello Sport suggests that Napoli are considering a bid for Nunez, with club president Aurelien De Laurentiis keen to bolster their attacking options for manager Antonio Conte’s Serie A title pursuit.”

Napoli are three points clear of Champions League finalists Inter Milan at the top of Serie A but need to add goals from strikers. Romelu Lukaku has scored 12 times in the league this season and Scott McTominay, crucially, has added 11 from midfield, but it’s an area that bears improvement.

“Napoli see Nunez as a valuable addition to ensure they build on their successful season. Other targets for Napoli include Lille’s Jonathan David, FC Porto’s Samuel Omorodion, and PSG’s Lee Kang-In,” continues the Express.

Atletico Madrid are also believed to have an interest in Nunez as an option to boost an attacking group that already boasts Alexander Sorloth, the Norwegian striker who scored four times in a La Liga game for the second time on Saturday.

Atleti head coach Diego Simeone also has former Manchester City man Julian Alvarez at his disposal along with Antoine Griezmann, who’s chipped in with eight league goals this season.

Nunez could also have options outside Europe.

A move to an unspecified Saudi Pro League team could be on the table and with negotiations delayed between Al Nassr and Cristiano Ronaldo, Riyadh could be a destination of interest.

The Express report also indicates that Goal has suggested the possibility of a return to South America and Buenos Aires giants River Plate.

Liverpool’s extended lap of honour continues with Sunday’s home fixture against Arsenal before the season concludes with games against Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace.
