Man United handed unexpected injury boost ahead of Europa League final with ace opening door to return

3 Min Read

Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee has revealed that he could be fit for the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur despite Red Devils head coach Ruben Amorim ruling the Dutchman out of the clash.

The 20-time English champions will tackle Tottenham in the showpiece event at San Mames on May 21, with the winner securing major silverware and a spot in the league stage of the 2025-26 Champions League.

Zirkzee has been missing for the Red Devils since suffering a hamstring injury against Newcastle United on April 13, and it was initially said that he would be absent for the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign.

Amorim also recently said that the 23-year-old would not be available before the end of the season, but the Netherlands international has opened the door to a spectacular return for the Europa League final.

“I’m trying to be back for the final,” Zirkzee told former Bayern Munich teammate Alphonso Davies on his Twitch stream. “We’ll see what’s possible but it’s going to be difficult.”

Zirkzee opens door to return for Europa League final

Zirkzee has made 48 appearances for Man United during the 2024-25 campaign, scoring seven goals and registering three assists, including two goals and one assist in 10 Europa League matches.

The forward’s early-season struggles saw him linked with a move away from Old Trafford in January, but he remained with the Red Devils and had been in strong form before picking up an injury against Newcastle.

Rasmus Hojlund is Man United’s only senior centre-forward available for selection in Europe, with 17-year-old Chido Obi not eligible for the Europa League, but he did make his full Premier League debut against Brentford last weekend.

Will De Ligt, Heaven, Dalot return for Europa League final?

Lisandro Martinez is out for the remainder of the season, while the Argentina international faces a battle to be available for the start of the 2025-26 campaign due to the serious knee injury that he suffered earlier this year.

However, Matthijs de Ligt, Ayden Heaven and Diogo Dalot could all be back for the final of the Europa League.

De Ligt is due to return against Chelsea in the Premier League on Friday with a view to being involved in the European clash, while Heaven and Dalot may also be able to feature at San Mames.

Toby Collyer is also currently on the sidelines with a muscular problem, but it is not a long-term issue, so the midfielder also has a strong chance of being available for selection in the all-English affair in Spain.
