Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has suggested that he should be sacked next season if he is unable to oversee a big enough change at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils suffered their 17th Premier League defeat of the campaign on Sunday afternoon, with West Ham United recording a 2-0 victory in Manchester.
Man United could save their season by winning the Europa League on May 21, with Tottenham Hotspur their opponents in the final.
Success in the competition would secure Champions League football for next term, but it has still been a horrendous league campaign for the club, who currently sit down in 16th spot in the table.
Amorim has said that the team’s league form has left him “embarrassed”, and the Portuguese has suggested that a change of manager should occur next season unless huge improvements are made.
Man United lost their 17th Premier League game of the season on Sunday
“For me, the biggest concern is that feeling it’s okay, we cannot change our position so much so it’s okay,” Amorim told reporters. “That is the biggest problem in our club in this moment because we are losing the feeling of we are a massive club and it’s the end of the world to lose a game at home. I think that is the biggest concern in our club.
“How do I feel? How a manager of Manchester United is supposed to feel in that position: embarrassed. And it’s hard to accept. Everybody has to think seriously about a lot of things here.
“Everybody is thinking about the final, the final is not an issue in this moment in our club, we have bigger things to think and we have to change a lot of things at the end of the season.
“It’s a different competition but in Europa League we don’t play quite well, but we have a little bit of that urgency, we cannot lose the games, we have to win it, we find a way to win the games. If Athletic Bilbao has a red card, we take advantage of that, we are so focused.
“And you see these games in Premier League, sometimes we are not focused. And we don’t have that feeling that we need to win to go to the next stage like we have in Europa League. So it’s something mentally in our team.
Amorim suggests he could be sacked next season
“There is no explanation, no matter the context. And I’m talking here, I’m the biggest [person] responsible for that. We need to change a lot of things during the summer.
“I don’t want to talk about players. I’m talking about myself. I’m talking about the culture in the club and the culture in the team.”I have that feeling and we need to change that. We need to be really strong in the summer and be brave. We will not have a next season like this if we start like this. If the feeling is still here we should give space to different persons.”
Man United will return to league action against Chelsea next Friday, before switching their full focus to the Europa League final, which takes place against Tottenham at Athletic Bilbao’s San Mames stadium on May 21.
The Red Devils are sweating over the fitness of Leny Yoro for the European contest after the Frenchman limped off against West Ham.
