Is Bayern set for a defensive reshuffle?
Recent rumours have linked Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen to €30 million-rated AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw. The validity of these reports has been strengthened further by Bild journalists Christian Falk and Tobi Altschäffl, who confirm that the Munich-based side has reached out and made contact with the player. While Bayern Munich has Thiaw on its shortlist and is exploring the possibility of a move for the defender, it has yet to make a concrete offer.

With Eric Dier’s departure to Monaco already confirmed, and Bayern Munich being open to selling Kim Min-jae, a move for Thiaw could make sense to bolster numbers in the backline. Without another defender joining following Dier out the door, Bayern has four first-team center-backs on its books in Kim, Dayot Upamecano, Josip Stanišić, and Hiroki Ito. Barring any serious injuries, this should be enough for the upcoming season.
If Bayern is to make a move for Thiaw, it would seem wise for the club to wait until it makes another sale to avoid being left with a bloated squad. However, Leverkusen needs an additional center-back option as it is set to lose Jonathan Tah on a free. Waiting around might not be a luxury Bayern has if it’s serious about securing Thiaw’s services.
