£17m player Aston Villa held advanced talks to sign last summer is now unhappy at the club he rejected them for

Aston Villa could now have a second chance at signing a player they pushed hard for last summer.

Unai Emery was blessed with the arrivals of several quality players during the last summer transfer window, as Monchi – President of Football Operations at Villa Park – oversaw the signings of Amadou Onana, Ian Maatsen and Ross Barkley.

The Spaniard added more to the squad during the winter transfer window, bringing Marco Asensio, Donyell Malen, Andres Garcia and Marcus Rashford to the Midlands as well.

However, there was a player Monchi missed out on in Lutsharel Geertruida who could now be reinstated to the list of targets at Aston Villa.

Lutsharel Geertruida and RB Leipzig both unhappy

Philipp Hinze of Sky Sports is now claiming that the Netherlands international could leave RB Leipzig this summer, after just one season in Germany.

The respected journalist states that Geertruida is “dissatisfied” in Leipzig, and the Bundesliga outfit are also discontent with how the Dutchman has fared this term following his €20m (£17m) move last summer.

It comes after Foot Mercato claimed in August 2024 that Aston Villa were in advanced talks to sign Geertruida from Feyenoord – after he had just helped Arne Slot win the Eredivisie.

The 24-year-old has made 16 starts in the Bundesliga this season in what has been a disappointing campaign for RB Leipzig, who sit seventh and are at risk of failing to qualify for any European competition next season.

Tottenham could look to get involved along with Aston Villa

With the Dutchman back on the market after just one season in Germany, this could be a development which intrigues Tottenham.

Spurs offered Geertruida a contract last summer before ultimately losing out to RB Leipzig.

Tottenham have since signed Kevin Danso to bolster the backline, although Cristian Romero wants to leave Spurs, so if an exit does materialise for the Argentine, perhaps the north Londoners will get in touch with RB Leipzig to enquire about the situation involving Geertruida.
