Currently sitting third in the Premier League table with just two games to go, the Magpies are one point ahead of Manchester City and in control of their top-four destiny.

After a crucial 2–0 win over Chelsea that kept them above the chasing pack, Eddie Howe’s side remain firmly on track to cap off the season with both silverware and European qualification.

Newcastle already won the League Cup earlier in March, beating Liverpool in the final, their first major trophy in nearly 56 years.

Alan Shearer picks Jacob Murphy for his Team of the Season

Among the standout performers this season has been Jacob Murphy. The energetic right-winger has stepped up this season, cementing his role in the starting lineup and becoming a consistent threat on the flank.

His performances haven’t gone unnoticed, with Ian Wright recently praising Murphy for proving Newcastle fans wrong.

And now, club legend Alan Shearer included him in his team of the season, praising his form and influence during the latest episode of Gary Lineker’s The Rest is Football podcast.

Praising the 30-year-old’s fantastic season, Shearer said: “You won’t want to go to sleep talking about Jacob Murphy because of how outstanding he has been.

“I mean he is there’s no doubt a candidate for the Team of the Season. Anyone going to argue with that?”

When Lineker and Micah Richards argued that he plays the same position as Mo Salah who is the obvious choice, Shearer jokingly suggested that he will make space for Jacobs in another position in his Team of the Season: “Well, we’ll move him. We’ll find a position for him (in the team).”

Jacob Murphy has been fantastic for Newcastle this season

Statistically, Jacob Murphy has been one of the Premier League’s standout performers this season, recording 9 goals and 14 assists in 39 appearances across all competitions.

His assist to Sandro Tonali against Chelsea on Sunday marked his 12th in the league, placing him second in the Premier League assist charts, behind only Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, who leads with 18.

Murphy’s creative impact is evident across several advanced metrics as well. He ranks third in expected assisted goals (xAG), third in assists per 90 minutes, and fourth in non-penalty goal contributions per 90.
