Arsenal have reportedly moved ahead in the race for Lille forward Jonathan David.
The Gunners have endured a difficult start to May, exiting the Champions League at the semi-final stage following defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
David could be the answer to Arsenal’s striking issues, although it is also said that the forward is wanted by European finalists Inter Milan this summer.
Mikel Arteta‘s men returned to domestic action at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, when they secured a share of the spoils with champions Liverpool.
Following a point on Merseyside on the weekend, the North London outfit remain second in the Premier League table, five points ahead of Aston Villa in sixth.
Arsenal lead Liverpool, Chelsea in David race?
According to InterLive, Arsenal are targeting serious improvements to their heavily-criticised forward line during the summer transfer window.
The report claims that the Gunners are keen on securing the services of Lille and Canada marksman David ahead of the 2025-26 Premier League term.
It is understood that Arsenal are currently the front-runners in the race for the signature of the 25-year-old, who has played at Lille since August 2020.
There is supposedly interest in David from elsewhere in the Premier League, with champions Liverpool and Enzo Maresca‘s Chelsea targeting the player.
The striker’s contract at Lille expires in June and he is said to be unsure whether to sign a new deal or depart after five sensational years in France.
Could David be the answer?
Operating without a classic striker, Arsenal have used the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Mikel Merino and Kai Havertz up front this season as they strive for a major trophy.
The Gunners have been accused of an unattractive style of play in recent times, likened to the Stoke City team in the Premier League during the 2010s.
The arrival of David at the Emirates would bring a top-tier striker into the mix, potentially allowing Arteta’s men to take the next step in their development.
