Carlo Ancelotti has officially been appointed as the head coach of the Brazil national team and is set to begin his duties on May 26th.

The 65-year-old Italian will depart Real Madrid following their final La Liga match of the season against Real Sociedad. Agreements are finalized, and contracts are signed, marking Ancelotti’s historic appointment as Brazil’s first foreign manager in their men’s soccer history.

Ancelotti had one year remaining on his contract with the Bernabéu side. An agreement was reached following cordial discussions between all parties. Diego Fernandes, representing the Brazilian Soccer Confederation (CBF), facilitated and led negotiations to ensure a smooth transition.

Tasked with World Cup Triumph

Ancelotti is among the most accomplished managers in the history of soccer. He will oversee Brazil’s 2026 World Cup qualification campaign. Their target is a record-extending sixth title at the finals, hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. He brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record to the Brazilian national team.

The Athletic previously reported that the 65-year-old had reached an agreement with Madrid regarding the terms of his departure, which followed a report on April 27th in The Athletic. The report stated that the Italian coach was prepared to leave Madrid. Ancelotti would fill the head coach role with Brazil on an initial one-year contract. His contract would run until the end of the 2026 World Cup.

He will be replacing Dorival Junior, who was dismissed in March following a 14-month tenure. He also had his first game scheduled. His first game was a World Cup qualifier against Ecuador on June 6th.

Legacy at Real Madrid

Ancelotti joined Madrid in 2021 and has secured two La Liga titles and the Champions League three times across two spells at the club.

Madrid’s recent Champions League exit occurred in the quarter-final stage. They lost to Arsenal. Madrid lost the Copa Del Rey final to Barcelona in extra time last month. Hansi Flick’s team trails by seven points at the top of La Liga with three games remaining.

Ancelotti’s appointment represents a significant coup for Brazilian soccer. His track record of success at the highest levels of the game and tactical expertise will be invaluable as Brazil seeks to reclaim its place as a dominant force on the world stage. The country expects their national team to win games and to win championships. Ancelotti’s leadership will be crucial to their success.
