Manchester United suffered their 17th Premier League defeat of the season on Sunday night, falling 2-0 at home to West Ham, a stark contrast to their Europa League success just days earlier.
Their convincing 4-1 win over Athletic Bilbao had secured a place in the Europa League final.
United will face Tottenham on May 21 in a match that could define their season, with Champions League qualification also on the line and Bastian Schweinsteiger has backed United to win.
But hopes of building domestic momentum ahead of the final were dashed, as Man United’s league form continued to spiral, leaving them 16th in the table.
While Amorim has found some joy in Europe, his Premier League campaign has faltered badly, and now even his recent comments are drawing criticism.
Danny Murphy slams Ruben Amorim for being too negative
Ruben Amorim’s comments after the defeat to West Ham were notably downbeat, as he underlined just how dire the situation has become at United.
He insisted that even the club’s Europa League success would not mask the problems at the club, which are much bigger than perceived.
But Amorim’s comments did not sit well with former England international Danny Murphy who voiced his concerns, suggesting it’s only adding to the negativity surrounding the club.
Speaking on Match of the Day, he said: “I get a little bit confused with some of Amorim’s interviews and the amount of negativity I’m hearing coming from him.
“Now I will give him the benefit of the doubt sometimes because maybe certain phrases in the way you say things or string sentences together when you’re new to the country, not new to the language but talking more of that language.
“But I am not a big fan of a manager continually and consistently talking negatively about how bad things are and how bad it is and ‘we’re the worst team in the Premier League etc etc.
“I’d like to hear a bit more solution-based answers and a bit more positively moving forward and thinking forward.”
Ruben Amorim’s time at Manchester United so far
Amorim joined Manchester United mid-season, replacing Erik ten Hag after a poor start to the 2024/25 season.
The appointment came with excitement given Amorim’s excellent form and record at Sporting in the Portuguese league as well as in the Champions League.
But Amorim has really struggled at Man United, with the club’s league form only becoming worse.
Competition | Games | Wins | Draws | Losses |
Premier League | 25 | 6 | 6 | 13 |
Europa League | 10 | 8 | 2 | 0 |
In the Premier League, Amorim has overseen 25 matches, winning just six, drawing six, and losing an incredible 13.
However, his record in the Europa League paints a much more positive picture— ten games, eight wins, and two draws—steering the club to the brink of the final.
