Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has offered his perspective on Trent Alexander-Arnold being booed by some Reds fans following Jamie Carragher’s comments after yesterday’s events at Anfield.
On Sunday (May 11), Alexander-Arnold, 26, made his first Liverpool appearance since confirming that he will be leaving his boyhood club upon the expiration of his contract in June.
Conor Bradley started the 2-2 draw against Arsenal, which saw the Reds surrender a two-goal lead, while Alexander-Arnold was a substitute.
But on 67 minutes, the Liverpudlian replaced the Northern Ireland international and was greeted with boos from some home fans gathered inside Anfield, while others chose to sing Steven Gerrard and Bradley’s name instead.
After the full-time whistle, pundits and fans were quick to give their take on the fans’ reaction.
Speaking on Sky Sports, former Liverpool captain Carragher, 47, said: “That’s the story of the game. That’s what we will be talking about after the game, and the back pages of every newspaper.
“I’m surprised how many. For me, I don’t believe any player putting on that red shirt who goes on to win trophies should be being booed.
“Booing one of your own players while they’re playing is not for me.”
Also on Sunday, Owen, 45, gave his perspective on the situation, having transferred from Liverpool to Real Madrid in 2004 before going on to commit the ultimate betrayal in supporters’ eyes when he signed for Manchester United in 2009.

Speaking on Premier League Productions on Sunday, Owen explained: “For his own people to boo him, it’s a big lump in your throat. I remember sitting in the players’ lounge after playing against Liverpool for Newcastle. Parents, myself, all in floods of tears because I’d just been booed by my own people.
“And I struggle to comprehend it nowadays and I’m probably the closest person on the planet who knows what it feels like to be in Trent’s shoes. He’ll be mortified.”
He added: “Trent will leave now, it’s his second to last game, maybe his last game, there were people that booed him and you can’t get that out of your head. Despite what’s happened for the last 20 years of his life of pure adulation.
“The one thing I remember now is I forget a lot but think they booed me at the end and it just makes you feel absolutely sick for what you did for the club.”
