Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has outlined his hopes for the Red Devils next season, as the Reds are set to suffer their worst league campaign since 1974.

Defeat to West Ham saw United slump to 16th in the Premier League table, with what was their 17th loss in the competition this term.

Success in the Europa League final would bail out Amorim’s side, rewarding them with Champions League football next season, which would ultimately be a success.

Although the standards that are attached to a club of United’s stature are much higher than their current state, Amorim can only be fairly judged after a summer transfer window, which gives the 40-year-old ample opportunity to assemble a squad suited to his style.

Damning United statistics have emerged throughout the season, highlighting how far the side have fallen since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, with the club now surpassing their worst ever number of defeats in a league season.

Following the club’s 2-0 loss to the Hammers, United’s target for next season has been revealed by the Manchester Evening News.

Regardless of whether United win the Europa League and qualify for the Champions League, the club’s power brokers believe a top six finish is an acceptable aim for next season.

The last time the Red Devils achieved that was under Erik Ten Hag during the Dutchman’s first season in charge, where he led United to third in the table.

Amorim’s Premier League record in charge of Manchester United:

Matches: 25
Wins: 6
Draws: 6
Losses: 13

Sixth place would ensure qualification to the Europa League, with the top five from the Premier League set to qualify for the continent’s premier competition, the Champions League.

United are currently 24 points behind Aston Villa, the team that currently holds sixth, a sizeable margin for Amorim to overturn next year.

Amorim could turn things around with a huge summer

It’s fair to say the Portuguese manager has enjoyed mixed results since replacing Ten Hag at the helm of United in November 2024.

Pundits such as Jamie Redknapp have commented on the commendable things Amorim’s done at United despite the club’s shocking form, highlighting his honesty as a refreshing trait to see.

However, the results don’t lie and if the club’s form continues in a similar fashion next year, it would be hard to imagine Amorim retaining his post.

That said, examples such as Mikel Arteta have shown the potential managers can have if they are backed for an extended period of time, and are given multiple opportunities to craft their ideal squad.

Therefore, if United recruit well and target the correct profiles, Amorim would be able to display the coaching pedigree that saw him better the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City in Europe with former side Sporting Lisbon.

As a result, this summer could be make or break in Amorim’s long-term future at Manchester United.
