Arsenal should forget about Nico Williams and target £60m winger who was released from their academy – Opinion

Arsenal have been doing plenty of work on a deal for Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams, but there is another winger who they should be looking at instead.

The Gunners are keen to reinforce Mikel Arteta’s attacking options for next season and are looking at signing a striker and a left winger.

Williams appears to be Arsenal’s top target and Andrea Berta has held talks with the Spaniard about a move to the Emirates this summer.

However, the North London club should be cautious about spending such a large sum on a player with no Premier League experience and move for a player who is playing much closer to home.

Arsenal should consider Eberechi Eze move over Nico Williams

Eberechi Eze could be the perfect fit for Arsenal’s left wing slot, with the winger having been primed for some time to make the next step in his career.

The winger is currently enjoying the most productive season of his career to date, having just taken his goal contribution tally to 23.

He netted a brace against Tottenham on the weekend and now has 12 goals and 11 assists in all competitions. Meanwhile, over in Spain, Nico Williams currently has 11 goals and seven assists in 44 appearances for Bilbao this term.

Since the last international break in March, only Barcelona’s Raphinha has more goals and assists than him in Europe’s top 5 leagues.

TBR Football revealed last month that Eze has told Palace he is ready to leave and there are several clubs keen on signing him. Eze has a £68 million release clause at Palace which means that interested parties know exactly how much a move for the 27-year-old would cost.

When Eberechi Eze was released from Arsenal’s academy

Eze has revealed he was released from Arsenal’s academy as a youngster and not knowing the next step was a rather daunting prospect.

The North London club will be kicking themselves at the idea of having let the England international leave at a young age – but such is the nature of academy football.

Arsenal have shown an interest in Eze ahead of next summer’s transfer window and signing a player with such Premier League quality feels like a sensible move.
