‘Big mistake’: Ian Wright says Arsenal made one crucial error that really cost them this season

3 Min Read

Arsenal’s season hasn’t quite panned out the way many had hoped it would.

Indeed, the Gunners have missed out on major silverware again this season after falling short in the Premier League and the Champions League.

As ever, there’s going to be an inquest into why Arsenal were unable to achieve their ambitions this season.

Speaking on the Kelly and Wrighty Show, Ian Wright has shared his verdict on where Arsenal have gone wrong this term.

According to the pundit, the big problem at Arsenal was the last summer transfer window, claiming that the Gunners made a big mistake in the transfer window.

Ian Wright says Arsenal made big mistake

Wright spoke about Arsenal’s shortcomings last summer

The pundit says that it was last summer’s window that cost Arsenal and that the Gunners didn’t get their signings right at that time.

“It’s last summer that cost us really, and what we should’ve bought maybe, that’s the big mistake was made in that recruitment and now it’s telling on us. Now, with Andrea Berta at the helm, we’ll see what he does. I’m hearing that Zubimendi is done,” Wright said.

Who did Arsenal sign last summer?

Wright says that Arsenal’s summer transfer window has cost them, and, he’s not wrong.

You always need to strengthen your squad after finishing as runners-up in the Premier League, but, in a lot of ways, Arsenal failed to do that.

Indeed, Arsenal’s signings last summer haven’t had much of an impact.

Fee
Riccardo Calafiori £45m
Mikel Merino £25m
Neto
Raheem Sterling

Riccardo Calafiori has had too many injury problems and has been displaced by Myles Lewis-Skelly in the Arsenal XI.

Mikel Merino has earned praise recently, but he’s not been playing in his natural position.

Meanwhile, Neto hasn’t impressed at Arsenal, while it would be really easy to forget that Raheem Sterling was an Arsenal player.

Indeed, Sterling has been poor all season and he’s barely had a sniff in recent times.

Arsenal’s summer transfer window wasn’t good enough, and that’s something the Gunners need to put right as they head into this summer.

As Wright says, Martin Zubimendi is set to sign for Arsenal, so the Gunners are getting off on the right track at least.
