Steven Gerrard’s hopes of a return to Rangers could be dashed as the Scottish club is reportedly close to appointing Davide Ancelotti, son of football legend Carlo Ancelotti, as their new manager.

Rangers have been on the hunt for a permanent replacement for Philippe Clement and it seems they’ve found their man in Real Madrid assistant, Davide Ancelotti, who has worked alongside his father in his last four roles.

According to Spanish news outlet AS, the deal is ‘almost certain’ to proceed with Rangers’ new owners actively searching for a fresh managerial face. It’s anticipated that Francesco Mauri, another integral part of Carlo’s coaching team, will join him at Ibrox.

Davide is expected to continue his assistant role to his father for Brazil’s matches against Ecuador and Paraguay in early June before heading to Glasgow to kick off pre-season.

Liverpool legend Gerrard was rumored to be among the potential candidates for a return to Scotland. His first managerial role was with Rangers, where he led them to their first title since 2011.

After clinching the title in his third season at Ibrox, Gerrard left midseason to manage Aston Villa. The team he assembled reached the Europa League final months after his departure.

Despite making an initial impact at Villa Park, Gerrard’s tenure lasted less than a year before he was dismissed.

Gerrard then decided to pursue his managerial career in Saudi Arabia, taking the reins at Al Ettifaq. His tenure there ended in January with the team positioned 12th in the league – a mere five points clear of the relegation zone.

Since Clement’s departure in February, Rangers have been under the interim management of Barry Ferguson, who has secured five victories in his 13 games in charge. The Telegraph reported that the list of potential successors was extensive, with former Wolves manager Gary O’Neil believed to be in the running.

Former Luton Town boss Rob Edwards was also reportedly in consideration, as was Russell Martin, who had a stint at Rangers as a player before managing MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton.
