Too many contenders for the same position, further complicated by a new purchase…

Bayern Munich’s upcoming summer transfer window will be a very crucial period. Several major players are slated to leave and the impending transfer of Florian Wirtz makes this a transition period, which the club will have to deal with carefully.

One of the biggest criticisms against the current leadership is the poor integration of the youth academy. The Bayern Campus has not produced many players who are well-integrated into the first team. Josip Stanišić, Jamal Musiala, and Alphonso Davies, though not homegrown talents, had at least come from the second team after proving their merit.

Per journalist Georg Holzner from kicker (as transcribed by @iMiaSanMia), the general critique has been directed at the fact that since the addition of Aleksandar Pavlović last season, there have been no other academy players promoted to the senior team.

The club’s nonexistent efforts towards campus integration, coupled with their need to buy young players from other clubs, has raised a lot of questions. In the current scenario, Bayern have purchased Tom Bischof from TSG Hoffenheim, which has received criticism.

The transfer of Bischof has been perceived as a slight against the academy players who have been eyeing spots in the first team. Particularly, it blocks the path of players with a similar profile or position, such as Paul Wanner, Gabriel Vidović, Javier Fernández, Arijon Ibrahimović, Felipe Chávez, and Guido Della Rovere, all of whom play an attacking midfield position.

BFW Analysis

What the news report did not address is the fact that some of these players have their loans ending in the end of June.

  • Wanner: FC Heidenheim
  • Ibrahimović: Lazio

Additionally the likes of Mathys Tel (Tottenham Hotspur), Bryan Zaragoza (Osasuna), Maurice Krattenmacher (SSV Ulm), Franz Kratzig (Heidenheim), Lovro Zvonarek (Sturm Graz) and Gibson Adi (SpVgg Unterhaching), all of whom are either strikers, wingers or attacking midfielders are returning from their loans too.

It is also the fact that manager Vincent Kompany did not make much attempt at integration either, in his first season. It remains to be seen how all of this will work out in the 2025/26 season.
