Tottenham’s Dejan Kulusevski could be another player added to their injury list ahead of the Europa League final, although there is a replacement capable of cementing his legacy.
Ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s most important game of the season, their injury list appears to be piling up at the wrong time, with Dejan Kulusevski a doubt for the Europa League final meeting with Manchester United on 21st May.
The Swedish international was forced off 19 minutes into Spurs’ 2-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace in the Premier League at the weekend, with details of his recovery time unknown.
Heavily criticised manager Ange Postecoglou will be hoping the 25-year-old will be available after he has contributed with 10 goals and 11 assists this season, including a goal against the Red Devils already this campaign.
However, if Kulusevski loses the race against the clock, Postecoglou will need to source a replacement for one of his main men, with only a small pool of potential candidates to choose from.
Son Heung-min to cement his Tottenham legacy
If there is one man that Spurs fans would love to see score the winner and earn them their first trophy in 17 years, it is, arguably, the captain, Son Heung-min.
The South Korean has been at the club for a decade now and is loved by the supporters, although his form this season has significantly dropped off, at least based on the standards he has previously set.
Appearances | 44 |
Goals | 11 |
Assists | 12 |
However, he is well-rested after coming back from a muscular injury, has seen his best form under Postecoglou come through the middle, and is desperate to win a trophy at his last attempt with the club he has stayed so loyal to.
If he is deployed on the wing – the position where he made his name – he will need to create chances for Dominic Solanke up front, although he has not had a problem in the past with supplying an English striker in a Tottenham shirt.
He may not be a like-for-like replacement for Kulusevski, but if Spurs do get their hands on their first trophy since 2008, perhaps it is written in the stars for their captain to be the one that leads them to glory.
James Maddison is also a doubt for Spurs
If Spurs are to win the Europa League, they are going to have to do it the hard way as Kulusevski could potentially be joining James Maddison and Lucas Bergvall on the injury list.
Playmaker Maddison will miss the Lilywhites’ remaining three games of the season with a knee injury, while 19-year-old Bergvall, who has excelled this season, has suffered the same fate with ligament damage in his ankle.
It is a bizarre European final featuring two of the worst teams in the Premier League this season, but for whichever manager comes out on top, it might just be the bailout clause that they are both in desperate need of.
