Jeremie Frimpong could be on his way to Liverpool this summer – although the Reds might not have been his first choice for a dream transfer to the Premier League.

Links to the Bayer Leverkusen star appear to be growing stronger and stronger, with talks already said to have reached an advanced stage. With Trent Alexander-Arnold set to depart for Real Madrid soon, Arne Slot and Richard Hughes don’t look to be wasting any time in finding his replacement.

Liverpool.com has known about Liverpool’s interest in Frimpong for some time, and now the player himself also looks to be keen on a move to Anfield, having already told Leverkusen he wants a move this summer.

There is of course plenty to attract Frimpong to a move to Liverpool. International teammates Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch are already in place at Anfield, with the latter in particular having already shown a close friendship with the right-back.

What’s more, the Reds’ interest in Frimpong dates much further back than recent months, or recent years for that matter. In fact, Liverpool was keen to sign him nearly 15 years ago as a nine-year-old.

Frimpong did indeed choose to join the Reds, but location proved to be a big hurdle, and in the end a move to Manchester City suited him better.

There has clearly been a mutual respect between club and player ever since, though, and Frimpong has previously hinted he would be keen on a move to Merseyside.

Asked what he thought about joining Liverpool by Ziggo Sport last year, Frimpong responded: “A great club, with history. That would be great. Who knows what the future will bring?”

You might think then that, given his history with Liverpool, Frimpong might actually be a fan of the club, or perhaps even City. It’s another Premier League club though that has caught the affections of the Dutchman.

“Was actually always Chelsea FC,” he told Sport Bild when asked about his dream transfer back in 2022.

“As a kid, I used to watch Chelsea games with my uncle, mostly because of Didier Drogba.”

It seems though that Frimpong could find himself coming up against the Blues next season if Liverpool does indeed follow through on its transfer interest.

According to Sky Sports, the 24-year-old is happy to make the move to Anfield if a transfer goes through. In any case, Frimpong looks set to leave Leverkusen this summer, having told the Bundesliga club he wants to leave.

A $39 million (€35M) release clause could even make Liverpool’s task a little easier, and get what could be a busy summer transfer window off to a flying start following the Premier League title win.
