Liverpool are hot on the tails to sign Jeremie Frimpong, who has cemented his reputation as one of the best attacking full-backs in the world.
So much so that Liverpool have held talks to sign Frimpong — a player whose versatility they admire in particular.
Arne Slot could play Frimpong as a wing-back as the Reds have analysed his game in detail.
However, as is always the case, transfers can sometimes fall through.
As a result, it is important for the Premier League champions to have alternatives in place in case their move for Jeremie Frimpong falls through.
Liverpool eyeing Lutsharel Geertruida as Jeremie Frimpong alternative
The Daily Mail have reported that Liverpool are interested in signing Lutsharel Geertruida as a potential alternative to Frimpong.
Geertruida is unhappy at RB Leipzig and the German side are too, with the Dutchman starting just 16 games in the Bundesliga this campaign.
The report states that it is a “serious possibility” that Liverpool try to sign the £16.8 million [Florian Plettenburg] man.
Liverpool tend not to focus on placing all their eggs in one basket when trying to sign players in any case.
However, at present, the Reds are merely interested in signing Lutsharel Geertruida and their pursuit has not advanced yet as they aim to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who will join Real Madrid.
Notably, the 24-year-old was a key player under Arne Slot at Feyenoord.
Lutsharel Geertruida vs Jeremie Frimpong stats this season
It is important to remember that the former Feyenoord defender is not a traditional right-back, as he is a centre-back by trade who can also do a job in midfield when asked to play an inverted role.
But regardless, Liverpool will be looking at both Geertruida and Frimpong’s stats this season when trying to ascertain which player to sign.
STATS PER 90 OVER 365 DAYS | LUTSHAREL GEERTRUIDA | JEREMIE FRIMPONG |
TACKLES | 1.77 | 1.1 |
INTERCEPTIONS | 0.99 | 0.36 |
NON-PENALTY GOALS | 0.04 | 0.14 |
SHOT-CREATING ACTIONS | 1.38 | 2.67 |
PASSES ATTEMPTED | 59.47 | 35.72 |
PASS COMPLETION | 85.5% | 76.3% |
It is clear to see that when it comes to defending, Geertruida is more of an active defender, as he has more tackles (1.77) and interceptions (0.99) while interestingly, he has a superior pass completion (85.5%).
Frimpong, however edges his countryman when it comes to his non-penalty goals (0.14) and shot-creating actions (2.67).
