Liverpool have reportedly made contact over a potential move to sign Bayer Leverkusen attacker Florian Wirtz.
Leverkusen already know that they will lose their head coach, Xabi Alonso, this summer, with the Spaniard set to take over the reins at Real Madrid.
The German club are now fearing that Wirtz could follow the head coach out the exit door despite having two years left to run on his contract.
At the weekend, it was reported that Leverkusen’s domestic rivals, Bayern Munich, have already agreed a deal with the player’s camp over a potential move.
However, Manchester City are also keen to sign the Germany international, having supposedly reached a verbal agreement with Leverkusen over a transfer fee.
Liverpool eyeing Wirtz swoop
According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Liverpool are ready to rival Bayern and Man City in the race to sign Wirtz this summer.
The update claims that the Premier League champions have already made contact with Wirtz’s representatives to register their interest in a possible transfer.
The Reds, who are long-term admirers of Wirtz, will step up their pursuit if it becomes clear that he is open to moving to the Premier League this summer.
However, there is uncertainty about whether the 22-year-old is willing to entertain a move overseas or if he would rather continue his playing career in Germany.
Why is Wirtz attracting signicant interest?
Wirtz has established himself as one of the best attackers in Europe after he played a key role in Leverkusen’s memorable 2023-24 campaign.
The German netted 18 goals and contributed 20 assists in 49 appearances last term to guide Leverkusen to a domestic double and the Europa League final.
While there has been no silverware this season, Wirtz has still continued to showcase his quality in the final third, registering 16 goals and 15 assists in 44 matches.
Given his importance to Leverkusen, the Bundesliga side are demanding a significant fee to part ways with their most prized asset.
There is a belief that it could take a fee in the region of €150m (£126m) to secure Wirtz’s signature this summer.
