The Frauen is preparing for next season…
In a release from the club website, Bayern Munich announced the hiring of José Barcala as new coach of the Frauen squad:
José Barcala has been appointed the new head coach of FC Bayern Women. The 43-year-old Spaniard has agreed a contract until 30 June 2027 and arrives from Swiss first division club Servette. In 2024, his first year as head coach there, he won the double of league and Swiss Cup, having previously built up a wealth of coaching experience in Spain, France and Scotland, among other countries.
José Antonio Barcala, to give the Galician-born coach his full name, began his coaching career at his home club Deportivo La Coruña. After a spell with Brisbane Roar in Australia, he was brought in as an assistant coach by French first division club Bordeaux before moving to FC Aarau in Switzerland. Prior to joining Servette in Geneva in 2023, he was assistant coach of the Scottish women’s national team.
Needless to say, Barcala was ecstatic about his new job.
“I’m proud and honoured to become part of FC Bayern Munich. The club stands for top performance and great ambitions, which makes the task even more exciting. I’m really looking forward to this new chapter and can’t wait to get started. We want to consolidate our position at the top of the women’s Bundesliga in the future too and also keep developing so we get closer to winning the UEFA Women’s Champions League. At the same time, I want to actively support the development of talent from our own youth set-up,” Barcala noted.
FC Bayern Frauen director Bianca Rech is confident that Barcala can keep the club on an upward trajectory.
“We’re very confident that in José Barcala we’ve found a coach who is a perfect fit for us both as a person and in sporting terms. Our aim is to make continuous progress — both on and off the pitch. We want to continue working on forming a team who are capable of winning trophies both domestically league and in Europe. We’re looking forward to working together and to the new season, which we will tackle together with real drive,” Rech stated.
Finally, Frauen technical director Francisco De Sá Fardilha said Barcala will fit “perfectly” in Bavaria.
“We’re delighted to have José Barcala as our new head coach, as he fits perfectly with the profile we’ve defined with the aim of continuing the development we started three years ago. José will bring in a modern training methodology that’s very similar to the work of his predecessor Alexander Straus. He’s a good communicator who has a lot of experience in developing top players and is passionate about working with young talents,” De Sá Fardilha
