Chelsea transfer news: Blues ‘turn attention’ to Serie A defender after Dean Huijsen snub

3 Min Read

Chelsea have reportedly identified an alternative central defender as one of their main targets for the summer transfer window.

While the Blues are currently focused on trying to finish in the top five of the Premier League table and win the Conference League, work is already being conducted behind the scenes regarding new arrivals.

Recent reports have indicated that Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen is one name that Chelsea would like to sign in order to improve their backline.

However, it was widely claimed on Thursday morning that the Spain international was on the way to Real Madrid after Los Blancos opted to activate his £50m release clause.

According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea know who they will look to sign as an alternative to the starlet.

Chelsea to target Serie A man?

The report claims that Lazio centre-back Mario Gila is on the radar of the West Londoners as they bid to bolster their defence.

Gila has been a regular for Lazio during the 2024-25 campaign, making a total of 34 starts and six substitute outings in Serie A and the Europa League.

Formerly of Real Madrid, the 24-year-old made two La Liga appearances from the substitutes’ bench in 2021-22 before moving to Stadio Olimpico for €6m in 2022.

Although it has taken time for Gila to prove his worth at Lazio, the former Spain Under-21 international now has 82 outings under his belt, scoring twice.

As per the report, Gila is said to be viewed as someone who would suit Enzo Maresca‘s demands at the back with a preference being to be confident with the ball at their feet.

However, should Chelsea wish to sign Gila, it is alleged that they would have to shell out in the region of £25m.

Would Gila be an upgrade?

Given that Gila is yet to make a senior appearance for Spain, there is an argument that he would struggle to become a first-choice pick at Chelsea.

That said, a replacement may be required for Trevoh Chalobah should the decision be made to cash in on the homegrown talent for pure profit.

Axel Disasi will also be sold or loaned out for a second time, yet it is questionable whether Gila should be regarded as an upgrade on those pair, or any of the other present options.

Lazio also only possess the 11th-best defensive record in Serie A, conceding 46 goals from their 36 matches.
