Bruno Fernandes has equalled a Manchester United club record after winning a prestigious award for a fourth time.

The Portuguese playmaker has been named the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year having chipped in with 38 goal contributions from 54 matches in all competitions.

United supporters voted the club captain as their choice to receive the honour for his performances this season.

Fernandes, who also picked up the Players Player of the Year award, finished ahead of runner-up Amad Diallo and Harry Maguire in the vote.

It comes after another impressive season for the 30-year-old despite the Red Devils’ disappointing campaign.

Across 54 appearances in all competitions, Fernandes has scored 19 goals and provided 19 assists, more than any other United player.

He has now been named United’s Player of the Year four times since joining the club in 2020.

This season also marked the second year in a row that Fernandes has won the award.

Only David de Gea and Cristiano Ronaldo have previously won the award four times.

De Gea is also the only goalkeeper to be recognised after his wins in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo won three times during his first spell at Old Trafford as well as in 2021/22 following his return to the club.

Another win for Fernandes next term would see him equal De Gea’s record three consecutive victories.

However, the skipper has revealed he told forward Joshua Zirkzee he does not want to be in the conversation again in 12 months time.

Fernandes told CBS: “I hope next year I am not even involved in the name – and do the same season as I did this year, and not be involved in the name of winning that trophy.

“Because that will mean you step up, Amad will step up, Garnacho will step up, Rasmus will step up…

“If they start scoring goals, start doing assists, start running backwards and tackling, they will be the ones having attention and not me, and I will be the most happy person in the world.

“I’m there to help my team-mates, get the best out of them, and that’s all I want to do because I know as soon as I can get the best out of them, my team will be much better.”

Fernandes could still add to his own impressive tally of goals and assists this season in United’s three remaining fixtures.

Those matches include the opportunity to win a third major trophy with the club.

Ruben Amorim’s side face Tottenham in the Europa League final on Wednesday.

And victory would also secure qualification for next season’s Champions League.

United are unable to qualify for Europe through the Premier League, sitting 16th in the table after 36 matches.
