The Leicester City striker became the first player to be signed from non-league football for a fee of £1 million back in 2012.

Jamie Vardy once revealed exactly how much his first Leicester City contract was worth.

Vardy, 38, will make his final home appearance at Leicester City’s King Power Stadium against Ipswich Town on Sunday (May 18) and in doing so will register his 500th appearance for the club and could see his goals tally hit the 200-mark with a strike against the Tractor Boys.

The former England international will leave the Foxes as arguably their greatest player upon the expiration of his contract this summer.

But he had to wait until he was 27 years old for his chance in the Premier League.

Vardy had a rather alternative route to the top. Most footballers come through the academy system, but Vardy was released by Sheffield Wednesday at 16 for being “too small”.

He then worked as a barman, a joiner and in a factory supplying medical equipment while playing for non-league Stockbridge Park Steeles.

The forward soon advanced up the leagues, signing for Halifax in 2010 before moving to Fleetwood Town in 2011.

Just one year later, he became the first footballer signed from non-league football for a fee of £1 million when he moved to Leicester, who competed in the Championship at the time.

And in his 2016 book titled ‘Jamie Vardy: From Nowhere, My Story‘, following the Foxes’ Premier League-winning campaign, he revealed exactly how much he was paid.

“The three-year contract I signed was worth a basic £8,000 per week… adding a zero to what I’d been earning [£800 per week] at Fleetwood,” said Vardy.

“With another £2,000 per week in the form of a loyalty payment, I was able to buy the sort of things I’d never been able to afford before. Or in the case of the three-bedroom penthouse apartment I moved into across the road from the King Power Stadium, rent somewhere like I’d never been able to before.

“It was a life-changing amount of money, and I felt lucky to have it – but it wasn’t the most important thing to me, I just wanted to play professional football.”

Currently, the 38-year-old reportedly earns around £140,000 per week, according to Capology, a far cry from the £800 per week he pocketed during his Fleetwood days.
