Liverpool is expected to do more transfer business this summer compared to last, with Arne Slot now having had long enough to decide where the priorities lie when it comes to improving his roster.
Having wrapped up the Premier League title with four games remaining, Liverpool is starting off from a good position. But there remain some obvious places to upgrade, namely at left-back and number nine, as well as finding a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who will be joining Real Madrid.
Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the latest transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds. We start with another emerging claim about Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz.
Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen)
Bayern Munich is believed to be the frontrunner to sign Bayer Leverkusen talent Florian Wirtz this summer. But Anfield Watch has claimed that Liverpool might have an advantage in the battle for the 22-year-old.
The Bundesliga champion needs to sell players before it can afford to spend the money to sign Wirtz, the report says. Leverkusen value its star man at well above $100M, which is a fee designed to ward of suitors.
Additionally, Leverkusen would much rather sell Wirtz to England than strengthen a domestic rival. This season, Xabi Alonso’s side has finished runners up to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga table.
Liverpool.com says: Wirtz would be a dream capture and he would make almost every team in the world better. If Liverpool can win the race, it would be a hugely exciting move.
Christopher Nkunku (Chelsea)
Liverpool would be interested in rescuing Chelsea striker Christopher Nkunku from the Stamford Bridge side this summer, according to Foot Mercato. The Frenchman has failed to make an impact in the Premier League since arriving from RB Leipzig for a fee of around $67 million (£51 million) in 2023.
Newcastle United and Bayern Munich are also said to be keeping tabs on Nkunku, who was one of the best attacking midfielders in the Bundesliga when he was with his previous club. He has never had a perfect injury history but has always been very talented.
Liverpool.com says: Arne Slot needs a guarantee of quality and available this summer and Nkunku would be a gamble. For a low enough fee, a bit like Federico Chiesa, he could be worth a risk. Other than that, though, there should be safer options out there.
