Man City ‘turns to Florian Wirtz alternative’ amid transfer latest and Liverpool interest

Florian Wirtz would be a dream addition to any roster in the world given the level of talent that the Germany international has. And Liverpool, as you would expect, is among the clubs to admire his ability.

Earlier this week, Liverpool.com reported that while the Reds would be keen on Wirtz if he decides to make the move to the Premier League, the expectation is that he will end up at Bayern Munich or even stay with Leverkusen, who would demand around $166 million (£125 million) to let its biggest star leave.

At the age of 22, Wirtz has made 196 senior appearances, scoring 57 goals and providing 65 assists. Last season, he was a key man as Xabi Alonso’s men won the Bundesliga for the first time.

According to the German outlet BILD, Manchester City is also considering a move for Barcelona star Dani Olmo to bolster its attacking midfield department should Wirtz prove unattainable. Morgan Gibbs-White, the Nottingham Forest ace, has also been linked.

Liverpool has Dominik Szoboszlai and Harvey Elliott as number 10s at the moment. But Wirtz could add even more attacking firepower, and, crucially, some more creativity that could help compensate for losing Trent Alexander-Arnold.

While Real Madrid is already stacked in attack with the likes of Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior — and with Rodrygo struggling to get the minutes in the team that he would like — it too could enter the Wirtz race. Alonso works with him at the moment and could attempt to take him with him to Spain.

Wirtz is not the only Bayer Leverkusen player that Liverpool could look to this summer. Liverpool is expected to make contact with Bayer Leverkusen shortly to confirm that it will be triggering the release clause written into Jeremie Frimpong’s contract, according to The Times.

Frimpong has been identified as one of the players who can inject fresh quality and impetus for the Premier League champion. His exit clause is set at $39 million (£30 million).

That is a modest sum in the current climate. And Frimpong, because he used to play for Manchester City and grew up in the North West of England, would qualify as a homegrown player, which would be an added bonus.

Speaking to Rising Ballers back in January of this year, Frimpong explained why he rejected Liverpool as a youngster. “There were scouts there,” he said. “Like Liverpool, Bolton, Man City, and a lot more. I chose Liverpool first.

“I was going to sign for them, but back then, driving wasn’t a thing, you know. My family wasn’t driving, and it was far. Man City was local, so I tried Man City next. It made more sense. It was 15 minutes on the bus.”

Liverpool.com says: Frimpong would be an interesting addition for the Reds. He is a completely different type of full-back to Alexander-Arnold, but Arne Slot was never going to find someone who was the same.

As for Wirtz, he would be an amazing option. At the price tag suggested, it would be very expensive — but also very much worth it. He is going to be one of the best players in the world for the next decade.
