Messi’s Argentina vs. Yamal’s Spain: Finalissima date reportedly set after first meeting

Following a promising first meeting, the Finalissima between Lionel Messi’s Argentina and Lamine Yamal’s Spain reportedly has a date set.

With Argentina and Spain winning the 2024 Copa America and UEFA Euro, respectively, anticipation quickly built around a potential showdown between the continental champions. Now, with Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal expected to meet for the first time on the pitch, the long-awaited Finalissima appears to have a tentative date.

Traditionally, the Finalissima is a one-off match between the reigning champions of South America and Europe, offering fans a rare intercontinental clash between two elite national teams. Despite the buzz surrounding this year’s potential matchup, logistical hurdles had delayed progress—until now.

The 75th FIFA Congress, held in Asunción, Paraguay, brought together officials from CONMEBOL, UEFA, the Argentine Football Association (AFA), and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to discuss the organization of the event.

According to a statement released by the AFA, “Key topics discussed during the meeting included institutional objectives, organizational responsibilities, logistical planning, the competition calendars for both national teams, and tentative dates for the match.”

When will the Argentina vs. Spain Finalissima take place?

Scheduling the match had become complicated due to the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, which forced European national teams to adjust their 2026 World Cup qualifying fixtures. However, Spanish outlet Marca now reports that the Finalissima is expected to be played during the March international window, between March 23 and 31.

There had been consideration for the game to serve as a preparatory fixture ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which kicks off on June 11, possibly helping resolve uncertainties surrounding the host nation. That plan, however, was ultimately dropped.

While the Finalissima isn’t an official FIFA tournament, it’s captured the imagination of fans worldwide. The matchup symbolizes a clash of generations—Messi leading an experienced Argentine squad, while Yamal headlines Spain’s new wave of young talent.

The previous edition took place in June 2022, just five months before the Qatar World Cup. On that occasion, Argentina dominated Italy in a 3-0 victory at Wembley Stadium. Against Spain, they’ll look to defend their intercontinental crown once again.
