Liverpool have reportedly reached a full agreement to sign Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong, and the Reds are now busy scheduling the Dutchman’s medical.

Frimpong was quickly identified as Liverpool’s number one replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who rejected the chance to sign a new deal in favour of joining Real Madrid on a free transfer.

Arne Slot is blessed with a capable deputy in the shape of Conor Bradley, who signed a new long-term deal at Anfield on Saturday, but the Northern Ireland international has not been deemed ready for the first-choice role.

Instead, Liverpool felt that the opportunity to sign Frimpong for just €35m (£29.4m) due to a release clause in his contract was too good to pass up, and they quickly prioritised the signing of the former Celtic man.

Now, journalist Fabrizio Romano has given Frimpong to Liverpool his trademark ‘here we go’, reporting that Leverkusen have been informed of the Reds’ intentions to trigger his release clause.

Frimpong is expected to pen a five-year contract with the Premier League champions until the summer of 2030, and Liverpool are currently scheduling the defender’s medical examinations.

The 24-year-old will become Liverpool’s first signing of the summer window, although Slot will have another new player in his ranks in the shape of Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will link up with his new teammates after his Valencia loan.

Frimpong returns to England six years after leaving Manchester City for Celtic in 2019, and having come through the Sky Blues’ youth ranks, he qualifies as a home-grown player.

The defender never made a Premier League appearance during his time at the Etihad, but he is now a Bundesliga invincible and has amassed 30 goals and 44 assists in 190 appearances for Leverkusen in all tournaments.

This season, Frimpong has contributed five goals and 12 assists from 48 contests, although he will likely have to get re-accustomed to playing as an out-and-out right-back at Liverpool as opposed to his current wing-back role in Germany.

Liverpool’s hierarchy may have been lambasted for letting Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk enter the last six months of their contracts, but all is well that ends well, and the signing of Frimpong shows that the Reds will not wait around in the transfer market.

Slot will be backed with a significant transfer kitty to improve his squad, a squad which ostensibly does not need much improvement upon a quick glance of the Premier League table, but there are a few gaps that need to be plugged.

A ruthless number nine will likely be the next item on the Reds’ agenda, as both Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota could depart for the right price, and neither have cut the mustard in the final third this term.

An eventual Andy Robertson successor at left-back must also be sought, as well as reinforcements in midfield, as Wataru Endo and Tyler Morton – currently out with a shoulder problem – could be tempted by offers of more regular game time.

The centre-back situation is also one to keep an eye on, as Ibrahima Konate will soon enter the last year of his contract, but Liverpool have missed out on the signing of Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen, whose £50m switch to Real Madrid has been confirmed.
