The versatile 24-year-old who operates primarily down the right-hand side, has emerged as a key transfer target for incoming Liverpool boss Arne Slot. Talks over a potential deal have gathered pace in recent days, with the Reds expected to trigger his release clause, believed to be around €35 million ($39 million/£29.5 million), and the player set to be having a medical in the coming days.

Frimpong, a product of Manchester City’s academy who also impressed during his time at Celtic, will be the successor to Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back. The Dutch international has enjoyed a standout season, featuring 53 times across all competitions for club and country, and played a vital role in Bayer Leverkusen’s historic Bundesliga title win in 2024.

With Frimpong making the switch to Anfield, he would join a proud lineage of Dutch players who have left their mark on Merseyside. Here’s a look at five of the most iconic Dutch players to wear the Liverpool shirt, three of who are current stars:

Virgil van Dijk

Undoubtedly the most influential Dutch player in Liverpool’s history, Virgil van Dijk transformed the Reds’ defense upon his arrival from Southampton in 2018. His composure, leadership, and aerial dominance played a key role in Jurgen Klopp’s side lifting the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League title a year later. Now club captain, Van Dijk remains a towering presence at the back and a modern Liverpool legend, becoming the first Dutch captain to lift the trophy.

Gini Wijnaldum

Signed from Newcastle United in 2016, Gini Wijnaldum became the engine in Liverpool’s midfield. Renowned for his work rate and knack for scoring crucial goals, few will forget his unforgettable brace against Barcelona in the 2019 Champions League semi-final comeback. Wijnaldum made over 230 appearances for the club and was a consistent figure during Liverpool’s most successful modern era.

Dirk Kuyt

A cult hero at Anfield, Dirk Kuyt’s work ethic and big-game performances endeared him to the Kop. Joining in 2006, the forward contributed key goals in the Champions League and domestic competitions alike. His memorable hat-trick against Manchester United and relentless pressing made him a fan favourite and a player respected by teammates and rivals alike.

Ryan Gravenberch

Still early in his Liverpool journey, Ryan Gravenberch has shown glimpses of the potential that once made him one of Europe’s most sought-after midfield talents. Signed from Bayern Munich in 2023, the Dutch international brings a unique blend of physicality, ball-carrying ability, and composure in tight spaces.

While injuries and adaptation to the Premier League have limited his consistency, Gravenberch remains highly rated by the coaching staff and is expected to play a more prominent role under Slot, whose system could unlock the best in the 22-year-old.

Cody Gakpo

Cody Gakpo arrived at Anfield in January 2023 with high expectations following a standout World Cup with the Netherlands, and he has gradually grown into an important figure in Liverpool’s attacking setup. Capable of playing across the front line, Gakpo’s intelligent movement, link-up play, and technical quality have made him a valuable asset, especially in high-pressure matches.

While his position may evolve under Slot, Gakpo’s versatility and calm finishing make him a key part of Liverpool’s long-term plans — and a strong example of the growing Dutch influence at the club.

Honourable mentions must go to Ryan Babel and Sander Westerveld, two Dutchmen who left their mark during different eras at Anfield. Babel, known for his pace and flair, had standout moments after arriving in 2007, while Westerveld was Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper during the treble-winning 2000/01 season, playing a crucial role in securing silverware.
