Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich was left nonplussed by critique over Ibiza trip

People did not like that Bayern celebrated before the season was over.

Following Bayern Munich’s title party after the match against Borussia Mönchengladbach, multiple members of the first team arranged a trip in their days off to Ibiza in order to relax and spend their free time in the sun.

German football hated this.

Multiple people talked about the trip, many more criticized it and others went even further, with the word Wettbewerbsverzerrung (distortion of competition) floating around Germany. Essentially, people claimed Bayern were distorting the competition of the Bundesliga by partying in Ibiza and assumed it would see the Bavarians put in a half hearted performance against a TSG Hoffenheim side that was still battling relegation.

Only for Bayern to sweep them aside 4-0.

After the match, Joshua Kimmich spoke to reporter Kerry Hau of his befuddlement at the critique of the trip.

“I couldn’t understand it at all,” the Germany captain professed, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “We have three days off, we’re adults, and we can do whatever we want in our free time, as long as we give it our all in training. We did, and it showed today. It was a positive sign from us as a team, because we’ve really worked our asses off this season, and we can celebrate that together as a group.”

Germany is a country full of traditionalist. Perhaps that is why they could not wrap their head around the trip. But with the UEFA Nations League coming up for some of the internationals, such as Kimmich, and FIFA Club World Cup as well, this was perhaps one of the only times such a trip could be made.
