Uli is back!

Many people looked at Bayern Munich’s poor season last year in finishing third in the table, the 18 point gap between Bayern and champions Leverkusen, at the hiring of a rather inexperienced manager in Vincent Kompany, at Bayer Leverkusen retaining all their best players and coach and came to the conclusion that Die Werkself were comfortable favorites for the Bundesliga title again in the 2024/25 season.

That did not happen, however. Following the final match of the season against TSG Hoffenheim, Bayern sit 13 points clear of Leverkusen as Vincent Kompany racked up the joint most points of a debuting manager in a full Bundesliga season since Josep Guardiola back in 2014. Not everything was perfect, but honorary president Uli Hoeneß was all to happy to highlight just how good of a domestic season Bayern have had:

“If someone had told me before the season that FC Bayern would finish 13 points ahead of defending champions Bayer Leverkusen and 25 points ahead of Dortmund, I’d have called them crazy,” Hoeneß said, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “If you followed the media over the past few weeks, you’d have the feeling that FC Bayern were having a very bad season. We’ve rarely won the league so convincingly.”

The media have, indeed, certainly Bavarians throughout the season. One of the most recent critiques comes in the form of disapproval of the Ibiza trip that the Bayern players went on before the Hoffenheim game. Hoeneß was hardly impressed by these critiques: “These are things that are typical of the state of our media—that they take such nonsense as a small trip so seriously,” he said, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “It’s no longer about football.”

But it is about football for the Bavarians, which is why they will be able to follow up their hearty recent celebrations following the convincing title victory with more celebrations. It is always important to remember to celebrate one’s own achievements, after all.
