Newcastle United are open to offering new contracts to midfield duo Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali this summer, TBR Football understands.
The future of Alexander Isak is the main issue for Newcastle’s hierarchy this summer, with the Tyneside club hoping to tie him down to a new deal in the coming months.
But the futures of Guimaraes and Tonali are also on the radar and they are ready to start discussions with the pair about extending their stays at the club.
Both players have been linked with moves away from St James’ Park, but given their importance to Eddie Howe’s midfield, they will be eager to quash talk of either player departing.
Newcastle want Bruno Guimaraes’ £100m release clause removed
Bruno Guimaraes signed a new deal last year, but which included a release clause, and whilst it stands at £100 million, it remains a concern for those within the club that someone could meet it, sources have told TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey.
Manchester City are huge admirers of Guimaraes and if anyone is able to pay, it is the former Premier League and European champions. Guimaraes cost Newcastle £33 million back in January 2022.
Newcastle also recognise Guimaraes, who was made captain at the start of the season, as their key performer and one who has been the real beacon to the club’s project since PIF and Eddie Howe arrived at St James’ Park.
As such, they are again ready to tie their captain down to a new deal, which whilst rewarding him again, would also see a clause removed.
Sandro Tonali
TBR Football can also confirm that Newcastle are also considering tying down Sandro Tonali to a new deal. The Italian has been outstanding this season after missing last term through his betting ban.
Tonali’s form has seen him attracting interest from Italy, and TBR Football can confirm both Inter Milan and Juventus have indicated to his representatives that they would like to bring him ‘home’.
But Newcastle see Tonali as a key performer and are also ready to reward him. Newcastle do realise that if they do break their wage structure to keep Isak – which they are willing to do, then they would need to boost their other top performers such as Guimaraes and Tonali.
