How Xabi Alonso almost ruined Liverpool’s move for Jeremie Frimpong – journalist

3 Min Read

Jeremie Frimpong looks set to become Liverpool’s first signing of the summer.

Liverpool are convinced Frimpong will succeed as alongside Conor Bradley, he has the tall task of helping the Reds replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is set to become a Real Madrid player soon.

While the Dutchman’s quality is undeniable, it will be interesting to see how Arne Slot deploys the 24-year-old — considering Xabi Alonso got the best out of him as a wing-back.

Frimpong could play as a wing-back for Liverpool but that would mean Slot would have to make major changes to his system.

Regardless, the potential addition of Jeremie Frimpong already shows Liverpool have no intention of backing down in their quest to continue dominating English football.

Xabi Alonso convinced Jeremie Frimpong to snub Liverpool last summer

Liverpool are closing in on Frimpong’s signing and it is only a matter of time until the move becomes official.

What should excite the Anfield faithful is that Arne Slot is on board with signing Frimpong.

Journalist Ben Jacobs has even mentioned that the former Manchester City defender has been on Liverpool’s radar for a year.

However, Xabi Alonso persuaded Frimpong to stay at Bayer Leverkusen in favour of a move to Liverpool at the start of the season.

The Amsterdam-born speedster obliged but ahead of the summer, he was ready to finally move to Merseyside despite the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City and Manchester United showing interest in his signature.

What still needs to be done for Frimpong to complete Liverpool move

Reds fans will be delighted to hear that the man in question rejected some of the biggest clubs in the world as his sights were set on working with Arne Slot and Co.

The fact that Frimpong has gained more experience by spending another full season under Xabi Alonso is also a positive for Liverpool as he could come in and have an instant impact on proceedings.

But the question Liverpool fans must be asking is what still needs to be done for the move to be made official.

Liverpool have agreed to sign Frimpong.

However, details regarding the agent fees and bonus structures still need to be finalised for the deal to be done.
