On the surface, the idea of Kevin De Bruyne joining Liverpool feels like pure fantasy. One of Manchester City’s greatest-ever players, crossing enemy lines to Anfield?

Even just a few years ago, it would’ve sounded absurd. But football moves fast — and after De Bruyne’s recent comments, it might not be as far-fetched as it once seemed. It is clear that De Bruyne is open-minded about remaining in the Premier League beyond the end of this season. “I want to play good football, whatever the decision will be. I know you’re trying to guess where I’m going to go, bit I will make my decision and you guys will know when I know,” he told reporters at Wembley after Palace’s 1-0 win.

“I don’t know. It depends who comes [in for me]. I have a family, I have young kids, and I have to make a decision that suits everybody, not just me. When I’m 20 years old and all by myself, I can make a decision that’s very easy, but now it’s a bit more complex.”

At 32, De Bruyne remains a world-class talent. Even after an injury-hit season, his vision, range of passing, and ability to dictate games set him apart. While the headlines are focused on Saudi interest, his comments also open the door to a Premier League stay.

Enter Liverpool.

On paper, it still feels unlikely. There’s the rivalry and the fact the Reds have a number of midfield options already. But scratch beneath the surface, and things get interesting Meanwhile, Liverpool under Arne Slot are at the start of their next era and could use a proven midfield conductor to guide it.

There’s also legacy. De Bruyne has won everything with City. Would a fresh challenge at another iconic club tempt him? A move to Liverpool wouldn’t just be about keeping up his level — it would be about cementing his status as one of the greatest to ever play in England.

Crucially, there’s also a personal connection that could help smooth the path. De Bruyne shares a strong friendship with Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk. The pair have spoken warmly about each other in the past and often spend time together away from the pitch.

Van Dijk is a figure of leadership at Liverpool, and could play a key role in any persuasive conversation if the door opened. In a dressing room undergoing transition, De Bruyne’s relationship with someone as respected as Van Dijk could make the environment immediately welcoming.

And tactically? He fits. Slot’s likely to favor a possession-heavy, fluid system — one where De Bruyne’s passing range and spatial awareness could be devastating, especially with runners like Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo ahead of him. He wouldn’t need to start every game either. De Bruyne’s experience and class alone could elevate Liverpool’s midfield and guide its younger players.

Of course, it would be a shock. Maybe even a betrayal in the eyes of some City fans. But this is a player thinking clearly about what’s next — not emotionally, but practically.

If Liverpool were to show serious interest, it wouldn’t just be a smart signing. It would be a statement of intent, the kind that says: we’re not just building for the future, we’re going for it now.

Kevin De Bruyne to Liverpool? It’s still a long shot — but in this ever-changing football world, it’s no longer unthinkable. And that’s worth paying attention to.
